The absolutely best thing about this dictionary is the clarity of its definitions...there is seldom, if ever, a need to look up another word in order to understand the original definition. The next best thing is its encyclopedic qualities...names and places also at your fingertips. I wish the binding boards and cloth were as durable as the first edition. I have never minded bringing out this unabridged dictionary just to look up one word because it has never let me down, even with a Scrabble challenge. Too bad it has been allowed to go out of print. I will add that Bowker rated this dictionary highly in their Buying Guide to General Reference Books for Adults.
This is THE dictionary I grew up with and learned American English; it was always on the back of my mind that I would like to use the Random House Dictionary of the English Language, Unabridged Edition again. I did not know that it was out of print now.I read a wonderful review of this dictionary on  site, and I ordered one. I'd like to thank the  people, the reviewer, and the company who handled my order. I missed my First Edition I bought and used in Japan, but I am moving on with my delightful, old friend in a different cover. This dictionary is not only useful for the English as the Second Language person but also for general readers. Do you read? Do you read dictionaries? If so, this one is for you.
We had bought the "first edition" of this volume in 1967 and after so many years of use the cover started breaking away and the book was looking very shabby so decided to do a google search and was delighted to find this Second Edition available. This book is much more than just a "dictionary", it is almost an education in one volume. Will not go on and on about all that is covered in this wonderful volume because there may not be another out there for sale. I am just thrilled that I found one!
We received our original dictionary with a stand from my husband's mom with a stand when we were first married and had it opened in our family room - it was used lots by us and our children! I wanted to replace it - it was quite worm - and was fortunate to find it on line. We now have it opened in our living room. The kids have asked for one for their families abd we are happy to oblige.
I got this dirt cheap - leave it out on a shelf or the coffee table and just peruse from time to time. It's amazing the things you'll learn like, gee, there are more than 35 definitions of the word 'box' many of them with 2-3 subdefinitions themselves. Who knew 'to box' meant to pour paint from one container to another in order to mix it evenly?
It is difficult to find a really good printed dictionary today. This is one of the few I would recommend.
May sound odd,but I collect dictionaries.Among my litany I have the webster's new international,the third new international,the american heritage,oxford and this one.Being a college student I get alot of use out of these gems and the random house ranks third(after the webster's and oxford)amongst the ones I use the most.
This is the ONLY dictionary my college English professor allowed us to use. This guy was so pro book that you weren't allowed to put your books on the floor, you had to treat them with respect. Still have mine, decades later.
