I was able to find a copy of this in excellent condition, with the original magnifying glass. If you are even bothering to read this than you know already this dictionary is historic and should be. Getting it in the "Compact" version [laugh], is a good way to save money. However, if you plan on trying to read the introduction, or any amount of text in this book for a while I suggest getting a magnifier that you can rest on the page itself. While trying to read the historic introduction with the included magnifying glass, I got a headache. This was caused by constantly have to focus and refocus my eyes every time I moved the magnifier. If you get one that you can sit on the page and just move back and forth 1/4" it will save your eyes a great deal of work.

I've wanted this literally for decades and was so happy to find a set in good condition at a very reasonable price. The seller kept in touch about the status of my order, and the OED arrived on schedule. It was packaged carefully and arrived undamaged. If you love words, this dictionary can't be beat. You will find yourself just browsing entries because they contain such fascinating information about the sources of words. Thanks!

I bought this photoreduced version of the O.E.D. when it first came out. I use it nearly every day and, in short, don't know what I would do without it. One viewer wrote of having problems since a cataracts operation. I've had problems, too, suddenly going from myopia with no presbyopia or astigmatism, to presbyopic and slightly astigmatic, with no myopia. But it's better than having cataracts, and I can read the text in bright light using the magnifier.

I am an English composition major and therefore have a certain level of love for English dictionaries. There is no better dictionary than the Oxford English Dictionary which compiles a comprehensive list of words from every English speaking country in the world. This dictionary also includes a detailed etymology of words, which includes both the evolving meaning of the word and examples of works from the time period referenced. The full version of the OED is around 20 volumes long and costs around $1,500-$2,000. This compact edition is two volumes with four micrographed pages from the original on each page. The words are obviously very small but legible. Most also include a magnifying glass. For someone who wants this dictionary for its function, rather than just to take up space on a book shelf, the compact version is an amazing compromise. I paid around $80 after shipping for mine, which is in a well used condition, but I have used it so many times since purchasing it. I love it.

English intellectuals have no sense of practical use; this is one difficult reference to use. Admittedly, it's got every word ever used in English since Chaucer, but it's ghastly to use. Be warned. The origin of the word and especially the pronunciation are excruciatingly difficult to figure out.Incidentally, I bought a used set, and it came without a hand lens. Harbor Freight (if you have one near you) sells a decent replacement for the Bausch and Lombe lens for $2.

These are by far the most comprehensive dictionaries I've seen. I do a lot of reading of colonial and older texts and these dictionaries have the meanings of words in these eras. I am very glad to have them.

We are glad to have this. While not an everyday-use item, when the mood strikes, there is no more satisfying way to learn the derivation of a word than to slip the magnifying glass out and scan the pages of this hefty dictionary. The condition, price, and delivery were very, very good.

I got this for my boyfriend while he was cheating on me because I knew it would be the best gift he's ever revived. He can never throw them away. This is the best gift there is... He felt so bad, that he broke up with me. Now he has to think of me every day when he uses these books in the center of his classroom.
