I'm using this book on its own without the Azar textbook. There are enough practices here that after I teach the topic, the students can work at their own speed and everyone has enough to do during class. Plus, the answers are in the back of the book, so there is no problem for those who got ahead of the rest.
I bought this for my wife and her second language is English. She is working on her English for he college classes and said this is the best and most useful reference she found. It give clear explanations has her work examples to very that she understands the concepts. Answers are provided for all of the problems she works.
This book is far more advanced than the description led me to believe. I purchased it for one of my adult ESL students who was looking for something he could do on his own at home. This student is middle aged, with little formal education of any kind before coming to the U.S. It was not appropriate for him at all. The print is small and the exercises quite complicated for someone who is new to learning. I do believe it would be appropriate though for ESL students who have had a formal education and are used to doing grammar drills, worksheets, and working independently. One of my students from Brazil (a PhD student at the local university) ended up taking it home and he says that he likes it.
I am a TEFL teacher and like to have many tools in my teaching kit. This is an excellent resource to help explain grammar issues to students. I use a variety of books in helping me to teach. Azar is well know for her use of diagrams and simple, easy to understand explanations.
This is the gold standard of grammar textbooks for American English. I recommend it's use as both a textbook and a reference book. It does not contain a tremendous amount of practice exercises, but you can always find those online. The advantage of this book is its thoroughness.
The content of the book is really good and very helpful. I bought a used one and it is not so good. It has many erased handwriting in it, which is not good, because I still could see the answers of the exercises.
Purchased this for someone learning English as a second language. Recommended by her teacher. It is a companion to the English Crammer book by the same author with two CDs. This edition has an answer key. I originally ordered the book without the answer key which was a mistake. So, be aware of the fact that there are two editions. This one with the answer key is recommended.
Great book, extremely valuable for beginners. And a great reference for more advanced users as well. Tiny little drawback... The companion files that are downloadable from the website, aren't really referenced throughout the book, that would have been a nice addition. Otherwise it's a great learning experience.
