I like the idea of this book very much. However, there are multiple mistakes in the answer keys, which make it hard to use as a learning tool. Furthermore, there are 17 chapters in the book, but the answer key ends on page 144 with chapter 10. The last 7 chapters have no answer key! (again making it hard to use this book as a learning tool). It is still a good resource for practicing and thinking in ASL. But I found using the book frustrating at times.
When you stop translating in your head you start to just understand witout the middle stepThinking about the puzzles helps you skip the middle step because you're goal is solving the puzzle not translating and you naturally skip the middle and start to just do it
This book is pretty helpful. I found that the answer key didn't match the signs on a few pages but very helpful none the less.
This is a fun book to go along with your ASL training. While learning ASL, (I'm about to be in ASL 4), you watch a lot of video footage. This is a nice break from that. I have always enjoyed word searches since I was a small child, not to mention you can do this on trips or whenever you have free time and are not in a position to watch a video.
Drawings are very weak and difficult to decipher. The illustrator has used a thick and thin line to indicate hand positions, but they often overlap each other and are very confusing. The games are entertaining, but I don't think they contribute to actual usage of conversational ASL anymore than a crossword puzzle teaches English. It is probably useful for beginners working on vocabulary primarily.
As a ASL 103 student I was looking for a fun way to study my ASL when I don't have a second person to quiz me. .after browsing many of the ASL books on , I came across this one and I love it!! It has good illustrations and there is also a tutorial at the beginning of the book that tells you how to read the illustrations.I would suggest this workbook to anyone who is serious about learning ASL and need a little something extra to study on the go!!
I've been using this book for the last week to relearn sign language. For the most part it's been awesome. I am finding that some signs don't match my ASL video dictionary and on some puzzles that have the entirely WRONG sign listed for the answer that they want. This becomes frustrating as I am trying to use this as a learning guide.
The puzzle book is a nice supplement to The American Sign Language Phrase Book for adult learners of ASL.
