Helps with complex prescribing needs The evidence base for drug treatments in psychiatry ranges from meta-analyses and randomised controlled clinical trials to single case reports, and from NICE guidelines to individual SPCs.  Where do you look for information when transferring a patient from one drug to another?  Where do you find a clear overview when dealing with a complex patient (e.g, with co-morbid epilepsy or liver disease or HIV infection)?   Where can you seek advice on prescribing psychotropics during pregnancy?  The Maudsley Prescribing Guidelines in Psychiatry! The leading clinical reference for handling prescribing problems as encountered in daily practice and for formulating prescribing policy.  Evidence-based and written by experts This book is the essential guide for anyone responsible for prescribing, dispensing or administering drugs for patients with mental health disorders.  All the evidence has been reviewed and summarized succinctly by an expert team of psychiatrists and pharmacists.  New content and improved format This new edition makes greater use of tables and boxes to facilitate quick reference and includes new sections on cytochrome-mediated interactions and psychiatric side effects of non-psychotropic drugs. Clinically relevant Chapters address plasma monitoring, schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, depression and anxiety, children and adolescents, substance abuse and special patient groups.  Each section has a full reference list.  The book covers prescribing drugs outside their licensed indications and their interaction with substances such as alcohol, nicotine and caffeine. This book is a most valuable asset to sit on the clinicians desk. It is useful in starting the search re problem side effects of medication, thinking of alternative strategies with patients where there is very limited choice. The content of the book also helps to quickly confirm for the active clinician that their recollection is correct. It deals with most of the data required by a professional working in the public service. The references are good and allied to a computer internet access to papers can greatly assist a modern clinical process seeking scientifically baked management of serious mental illnesses

I have been using this book ever since I finished my residency, 5 years ago, and it is still my favorite for guidelines and risks of the most current medication. Excellent book, easy to find topics, very objective

The Maudsley Prescribing Guidelines in Psychiatry is an excellent textbook. It is very well organized and easy to read. It cover the topic of psychiatric medications in great detail. Maudsley's Prescribing Guidelines is a great textbook for psychiatrists, psychiatry residents, and medical students. I give it 5 Stars. By Gregg L. Friedman MD, Psychiatrist, Hallandale Beach, FL

I am leaving next week to start a locum tenens in Wyoming. Not having practiced psychiatry in two years, I wanted a concise psychopharmacology review book. This book is terrific. Well written and interesting. It was written by two pharmacologists and a psychiatrist from Great Britain but is totally applicable to clinical practice here in the U.S.. Highly recommended.

I am a psychiatrist and this is a great reference. It provides pertinent information, has nice tables comparing medications and has pleasantly written text that is not at all boring to read. I find that this book goes where others don't go in terms of making dosing recommendations that don't just come straight from the FDA recommended package inserts. It is a British text so some of the medications are not available in the US and a few US drugs aren't in this text but I still highly recommend it.

Excellent book for review of basic psychopharmacology management and principlesGood reference for outpatient / Inpatient service. effective consice approach to some unique and uncommon situations when choosing medications, tapering medications , cross tapering medications, monitoring side effects and monitoring levelsyou can quickly shift between sections as main sections are marked clearly red if looked at from the side viewNew editions is available with updated new medications and some medications that are only available in US and not UK but this cheaper version could still serve well for most clinicans.

This has been a useful text so far. It has information and insights that I have not come across in other publications. As a new psychiatric provider this has been quite a valuable resource to help guide my patient care.

I use this resource nearly every day. It is vital for psychiatrists and doctors working in psychiatry. It is also very useful for pharmacists and mental health nurses and is a valuable reference for all health professionals.
