Genealogy Standards: Fiftieth Anniversary Edition
Available To Downloads

REVISED AND UPDATED FIFTIETH ANNIVERSARY EDITION Family historians depend upon thousands of people unknown to them. They exchange research with others; copy information from books and databases; and write libraries, societies, and government offices. At times they even hire professionals to do legwork in distant areas and trust strangers to solve important problems. But how can a researcher be assured that he or she is producing or receiving reliable results? This new edition of the official manual from the Board of Certification for Genealogists provides a standard by which all genealogists can pattern their work.

A prerequisite for some Professional Genealogical Societies, it is a little tiny book with nothing of real value. The standards are equal to or less than any professional journal. If you have a Masters or Doctorate Degree, you will say, "Wow,, really?" If you have never written professionally or achieved higher education, you might say, Wow! Really Good!"

What else can I say? If you are serious about genealogy, this must be on your bookshelf. Along with Tom Jones' "Mastering Genealogical Proof," a significant addition to your resources.

This book is the new one people say they carry around to review and can't be without. I have to admit, I thought it would take my research up a notch and I wanted it. If you don't already know what's in this "pamphlet", you don't know much about genealogy. Luckily it's inexpensive, because it's going to be collecting dust somewhere. This is the book the professor says everyone MUST buy--mainly because he wrote it.

You will be tempted to buy this book on the theory that it's cheap, so why not? If you pick up even one thing you' don't know it's worth it.Save your money. There were so many good reviews of the book that I thought the bad ones were just being snarky. But it turns out they weren't. In fairness to the authors, it says right on the cover that this is a set of standards for one specific organization, not a "how-to" guide. And I guess in that context they need these things spelled out internally. For the rest of us however, there's little here. Only five ideas that basically boil down to the fact that you have to be able to document your family line. They don't go into what sources constitute adequate documentation, and certainly not where to look for them. It's a nit, but an example: they don't even tell you how to format a citation, sending you off instead to "The Chicago Manual of Style" for that.I'm sure the guys who wrote this book are wonderful people, but save your money. Use it to photocopy some records when you find them, or buy yourself an ice cream cone. However well intended, there's nothing here.

This book is a must have. Also, don't miss the videos by the bare-foot genealogist and other on thestandards. So important for continuity of results and being ableto have this reference is an important step to enhance the quality ofmy research for future generations.

Some great information on referencing and finding meaningful data in records and hits. A lot of it you will already know if you have been doing your own research for any time, but there are some nice standardized practices that will help make your research more consistent and useful.

I like the book but was really disappointed in the state of the box when I received the book and the book had a slight bend in it. The book however is a good resource for a genealogist and was even referenced in the genealogy conference I recently attended.

A little brief - I expected more detail for each of the standards - but a worthwhile acquisition for serious amateur (and professional) genealogists.
