This book is a must read! For everyone who had a great relationship with their dad, but wish they knew him better. The author does a great job of posing questions, which he wished he could have asked his father before he died. He has obviously searched his soul to understand the man who was his father. The questions are playful, serious, and ultimately make the reader examine their relationship with their fathers and their own true thoughts. All in all a very enjoyable read and thought prevoking process. Everyone will enjoy reading this collection of questions.
Great book for learning about yourself and passing along your feelings, foibles and future wishes to your children. Works well for those that had a great relationship with their own father and want to continue the tradition; works even better for those who weren't close to their own father and want to make the most out of that special relationship with their own children.
I found this book in a store in Seattle. I wasn't looking for anything in particular, I just picked it up and flicked through the pages and before I knew it I couldn't put it back down as my eyes began to cloud up with tears. I had a special relationship with my father, but never really, really knew him. The questions in this book seem to allow me to touch his memory with a much deeper insight than ever before. A wonderful, pleasant, and lovely book to read. It brought back special memories.
At first glance I thought this was just another "quick-fix" book offering [bad] platitudes about the quest to reveal the mythical father-figure.I started to leaf through it and three days later I'm still excited and troubled by what "Questions" has revealed to me.The questions are, quite simply, stunning in their originality and form. There's stuff here I wouldn't have thought of asking in a million years. And then there's the narrative that is sprinkled throughout the text; a dark and troubled trans-America motorcycle trip during which the author has an eerie insight into the importance that his father has played in his life. Too late, of course. Staniforth returns to England just in time to watch his Dad die, and so begins the internal intellectual voyage of discovery about his father.Read it, use it, buy it for a father or a child. This book can save families.
This book asks both hard and easy questions. It gives the reader a chance to get to know the man with the utmost depth. Some of the questions are a little deep, but I encourage the reader to ask them all. Some of the questions may be superficial, but you might get some surprising answers. Good book. Great starting point for getting to know the man behind your dad.
I discovered this book when reading Season of Life: A Football Star, a Boy, a Journey to Manhood. After going through a divorce and having the kids move out of the region where I lived, there were even more than the usual challenges to having dad/kid conversations. After reading this book and with that history, I decided last summer to write a book, Answers for My Children, in which I respond to Staniforth's questions and several dozen more I added. The goal is to give them the book on Father's Day this year. His questions are a mixture of anecdotal historical reflections and serious questions. For example, the latter questions include asking what makes a good dad, a good child, a good marriage, when will I know I have met my true love, what does God mean to you, what is success, what's the mark of a good person, what should I do when someone wrongs me?The process of writing the book has brought a stream of unexpected blessings. First, it has brought back a flood of memories. Second, it has allowed me to reconnect to people in my life as I sought more information to answer the questions. Some of them have then decided to do something similar in their families. Third, answering the more serious questions has forced me to further clarify my own thinking about important topics. Fourth, it is stimulating thoughts and interest in finding ways to encourage other dads to be strong and present in their own kids' lives, something that is sorely missing in many families these days. All in all, the book is turning into an emotionally intimate gift to my kids that I hope will fill a gap from our previous years and then be a starting point for many more verbal, in-person discussions moving forward. Don't miss out on doing something similar with your kids!
I bought this book weeks before my father passed away; I wanted to see if I had left any stones unturned. It was really too late for me, but I found the book had a good sampling of things one might want to ask - preferably when there's plenty of time left.
While the questions seem interesting and thought provoking, there is Very little room to write in the book. The whole purpose of this (I thought), was to have the questions and answers in one special book. Didn't realize you had to buy a legal pad to accompany the questions.
