Finding a book for first-time dads that isn't a bro'd-out, lame joke-book with gags about staring at your partners breasts was staggeringly harder to find than I'd expected. I've read two of Brott's books—this one and it's series predecessor The Expectant Father—and both are superb, down-to-earth, informed guides to give you calm peace of mind when the newborn arrives. If you actually want to learn and be spoken to like an adult rather than an overgrown child, this is the book (and series) for you.
Super book for my husband a FTD. We loved the pregnancy book in this series and plan to buy the following books as our little one grows up. These books have a great sense of humor and cover important topics that some other books may gloss over due to being too yucky, serious, or being a feminine issue. We just wish there was more of a week by week feature (instead of month) as it's fun to read the chapters as your child grows, but we understand why the book was divided up this way.
I gave this as a gift to my son-in-law in expectation of their first child. It took all I had in me not to put up little flags on all the excellent points, suggestions, and reflections loaded up in this book! It covers everything from understanding the hormonal changes the mother of your child is having to why on earth the baby's poo looks like it does. Covers emotional and physical development of the child from birth all the way through toddler stage. I kind of wish I had this book when I was a young, single mom!!
I purchased this book after reading the first oft he series (The Expectant Father). I had never heard of the book until looking at reviews and seeing it was the #1 rated. I enjoyed the first book, so naturally I wanted to continue with the next one (this one), to accompany the first year. I actually borrowed this book from the library at first, and enjoyed it enough to want to purchase it. Sure, you can look online and hundreds of sites for this information and much more, but there are some times I like a tangible book I can hold and read. The thing with this book, is you can't really get ahead of yourself and finish it right away. Well, I guess you could, but unless you remember every detail and when it applies to your baby, it won't do you any good.Use this book as a tool or a guide and read the corresponding chapter in real time with your baby. Doing so will keep the information fresh in your mind and will be the most beneficial to both you and your child.
Bought this because Armin's first book, The Expectant Father was helpful. This book was not. Did not provide much good advice and a lot of the stuff in this book repeats itself and was already stated in Expectant Father. Felt like there was a lot of page filling...I recommend instead 'Be Prepared' and 'Happiest Baby on the Block'
I wish that more people would understand the importance of fathers in children's lives. Father's parent differently and those experiences are invaluable for your child. Its a very straight forward book and easy to read.
Being a new parent is difficult and finding information for fathers can be challenging. I found the first book in the series helpful, and this one is also offering solid insight into my child. A great resource for dads.
Bought this for my husband as a father's day gift while I was pregnant. He loved it and really got into it! The book is great - hits on a lot of hot topics and subjects that some people shy away from. It was also right on the money in terms of how I was feeling month to month and what he could expect. :) It definitely helped prepare him for the big day - I would highly recommend it.
