Bought this book for a Spanish for Nurses course and it was very good. Presented chapters for various scenarios and introduced vocabulary. I didn't think much of the DVD since the native speakers spoke at breakneck speed and I couldn't keep up -- though a little girl spoke slow enough for me to catch on ;-) Otherwise, a good book and is helpful.
This books is excellent if you have had basic Spanish. My professor tried to use it, saying no background was necessary and for the students who had no prior Spanish it was rough. Plus, it would be nice if they had some sort of a verb conjugation cheat sheet at the beginning.
The book is perfect for those with no or little knowledge of Spanish, and no one else.I am in a senior level Spanish class and we used the book simply because there are not many on the subject. We actually used it as a guide of what not to do culturally, with a specific emphasis on the greeting dialogue in the book. If you need to learn Hello is hola and the h is silent in Spanish, this is the book for you. If you know about the castillian lisp and can conjugate more than present, preterite, imperfect, and future then don't buy it.
This book was required for my class. It was for a good price and it supplies all of the info that I need to look up. Detailed enough for me to increase my medical Spanish knowledge.
I am a fluent Spanish-English bilingual and former second language teacher who now volunteers as an interpreter in a health clinic. One of the doctors at the clinic showed me this text which was being used in a course he was taking. I was so impressed that I bought a copy myself. As a teacher I can attest to the fact that the authors have designed an excellent book with an emphasis on communicative skills. As a life-long learner I can say that there are many details regarding vocabulary that I, myself, picked up and will put to good use.
I purchased this for a professional development course for medical staff. It was an excellent compliment to the other resources that I utilized on the sessions.
