Only reason I give this 3 Stars is due to Kindles lack of ability to quickly search for key terms and phrases when you're taking an open-book exam online. Wish this text was made to be used with Adobe Reader and hope makes some major upgrades to Kindle and the search-ability of texts.
I stated that there was minor writing/notes in it, but there was a lot more writing in it than expected and not in good condition. I paid too much for the condition it was in. As for the content in the book itself, it definitely seems to be written in a feminist style. I'll be glad when my class for this is over. This book is not worth it's price though that's for sure.
The book arrived very fast, but it's obviously not a new book. It's in decent condition and not much highlighting. Its great for the money and was able to save several hundreds of dollars on books by renting mine. Will definitely do it again next semester.
I haven't read the whole textbook yet but from the 7 ish chapters I have gotten through so far I think it's pretty well written. The structure is very helpful and it is very interesting. I think it would be a good selection even if you aren't taking a course on marriages and families. It has great insight into how we view marriage, sex, families etc and really draws your attention to new ideas and new ways to think about the same content that you already know.
I read the sixth edition and every chapter I found to be very bias. Specifically in the chapter on birth defects. The authors leave out the fact that many birth defects (such as autism) cannot be traced to a cause. If the young women who are traditionally taking these classes every have a child with autism and have only the information in the book as a guide, they will undoubtably be blaming themselves. The book is woefully lacking is the real issues of today and I feel it approaches controversial topics safely, as in such cases not covering them at all, such as the swinger movement in america, which is not really even mentioned and it is very popular among all classes. Another issue I have found is the lack of discussion about political party and mate choice. I am almost done with the book and they have avoided that topic as well, choosing instead to approach the mate selection process with kid gloves on. It is unfortunate that they are giving a watered-down, sugar-coated, idealized version of facts. Either they are not living in the same time period as the rest of america or they are completely missing the boat. Very disappointed with the text I read.
I think it was really the class that I liked but the book is very insightful. I would have never read it if I thought I could get through the test without it.
The Book was a rental and pretty badly worn out.
This book was bought for a sociology class.I really enjoyed it it was very educational and a easy read. I recommend this book to all that are interested and sociology or marriages and family.
