This is my favorite series for teaching ESL listening/speaking skills to adults. I especially like levels 4 & 5, because they use authentic excerpts from NPR radio broadcasts for their audio segments. They also have the full script in the back of the book if the student wants to follow along. They pull certain words from the audio segments and use them to create vocab. lists, then also have comprehension and discussion questions. The topics are quite interesting and spark lots of great conversation. So for this sort of thing, there is nothing I've found that students enjoy more.They do also have sections on grammar and pronunciation, which I usually skip. They are not that great, and we cover those topics in other books.Now, what do you need to order? You really can't use the books without the audio CD's, but they must be purchased separately. The publisher also has a web-based feature which requires a passcode, but you don't really need this to use the books--it's an extra resource. There is also a teacher's guide you may choose to get--it has answers to the questions and tests, but again this is optional. Both of these things are very nice, but optional. So if you only need to tutor one or two adults and cost is an issue, you can get by with just the book and the audio CD.
As a 10-year ESL teacher, I highly recommend the NorthStar curriculum. Engaging, interesting, and challenging. It integrates all 7 skills of listening, speaking, reading, writing, pronunciation, vocabulary, and grammar. There are 2 strands, one with listening & speaking focus, & the other with a concentration in reading & writing.
It would bring the code but it didn't. There's no access to the lab. Incomplete, it seems cheap but it is NOT.
I got it in an excellent condition, brand new, along with the reading and writing book which was in the same condition. They are much cheaper than the ones at the college, although they are the same edition, I'm using them daily. I'll sell them when the course is done.
the book that i ordered came without the plastic wrap and the access code to the mynorthstar lab activities. i would like to get an answer as soon as posible because i currently need that code.
where is the Access code? I want to learn to LISTENING, I don't have the access code and then I can't listening to this book... please inform to me where is the access code...
Condition is not the worst, but I expected better condition. Especially, the markings by the black roll-pen, made the look messy....
The book which i got came unwrapped and without access code inside!! Im not satisfied with this order!!!!
