As you read this text it becomes apparent that it was written by an in-the-trenches clinical pharmacist. It focuses on the practical application of pharmacokinetics in patient care. The text is very readable, written in an easy to follow style. The tables and illustrations are well presented, providing insight to the topic. There are chapters on aminoglycosides, vancomycin, digoxin, antiarrhythmics, anticonvulsants, cylcosporine, lithium, and theophylline. Each chapter contains practical step-by-step examples for both initial dosage determinations and serum level analysis. But you'll need to look elsewhere for pediatric pk information, application to peds is limited.
Bauer does an excellent job of explaining the basics and details of pharmacokinetics; this book is great guide for both students and practicing clinicians. Many pharmacokinetic residents and fellows live by this book and it came highly reccommended to me by experienced clinicians.
Had a really bad teacher in kinetics so this book has been my lifeline all semester. Its very informative, and I love that each chapter come with sample problems throughout the chapter, and a ton of practice problems at the end. Answers for the practice problems are in the back, but not detailed like the sample problems. The book came in good condition and wasn't very heavy. four stars because I wish the book contained more drugs.
In my view, the Doody's Review precisely captures the strength of this book. I already had a decent grasp on the concepts of pharmacokinetics but was desperately looking for a resource to learn (by self studying) the clinical application of the pharmacokinetic concepts. This book nicely fits the bill for me.
