If you want to know how we got to this state of polarization, this book offers an illuminating view into the mind of one the people who failed to stop it. Mark Gerzon has been a leader of efforts to mitigate political polarization since the 1990s and this book offers evidence for the theory that he failed because he prioritized trust over the demand that trust be merited. The book exemplifies a talent for gaining trust (e.g. through rhetoric and shout-outs to potential allies) absent actually meriting trust (e.g. through careful thinking). This book doesn't even mention that we are biologically predisposed to disagree in ways that create political poles, nor consider the evidence (in psychology, neuroscience, and genetics), nor address the question of why such predisposition exists. In a sideways denial, Gerzon even claims (with no evidence) that "conservativism and liberalism were not divinely ordained...God did not create left and right--we did." Thus, Gerzon implies that we did something which created corrupted the world and produced conservatives and liberals--from which it follows that conservatives and liberals ought not vote.Rather than believe that predispositions are handicaps, we can believe that different citizens are wired for different roles. Then the work of reuniting America is the work of hammering-out the different authorities, powers, licenses and restrictions to be assigned to citizens of each role. Rather than begin this work, "The Reunited States of America" attempts to build support for a vision that "Americans can work together with people different from ourselves to find common ground that can strengthen the country that we all love.
