This book will not be without controversy. Dr. Chez offers sensible advice to parents and professionals that doesn't hesistate to touch the "third rail" issues in the autism community. Both conventional (excluding things like ABA)and alternative medical approaches are examined.Dr. Chez, based on his 15-20 years as a Board Certified pediatric neurologist, weighs in strongly on the value and shortcomings in all of them. His own medical colleagues may be in for a bit of a shock in his criticism of mainstream medicine's care of children on the autism spectrum. Likewise, advocates of some (but not all) alternative approaches will not be pleased reading his views. But everyone ought to read them.Dr. Chez is a big believer in treating indivdual patients individually but a theme throughout the book is the emergence of distinct autism sub-types. Dr. Chez argues that each can can call for sharply different interventions.
Probably the most important, rational, groundbreaking work in the medical treatment of autism in existence. I am a physician and mother to a child with autism. He provides information from real scientific work in autism using knowing about the known biochemistry of the disease and draws from his real-life clinical experience working with children with autism that can improve the associated and core deficits of autism. Every child with autism deserves a true neurological evaluation including EEG's, blood tests for autoimmune disease, metabolic disease and treatment with medications that have known mechanisms of action and effects. It is difficult to know who is offering quack treatment to desperate families for the purpose of profit. If I could get into his clinic, I would, but from what they said, he is busy trying to focus on research. Every parent of a child with autism should read this and advocate for medical evaluation and treatment.
Great guide! Dr. Chez is our neurologist, and I read this before going in for our first appointment. Our daughter has high functioning autism and had an unusual late regression (age 5) with loss of language and social interest. Our previous (also highly regarded) neurologist said - tough luck, that is autism. Dr. Chez did comprehensive testing and has tried medicines and supplements discussed in his book, and our daughter has substantially regained skills. She's only been on medication for 1 1/2 months and there are others medications that we may add in. Note that the book is written for both parents and medical professionals, so there are parts where even a scientifically minded parent might choose to skim rather than read for complete comprehension.
