I am a HUGE advocate for using picture books to teach ELL/ESOL/ESL students at any grade level! I think the pictures along with the writing really helps them to understand the language.I used this book along with the metaphor book in this series to teach a unit on similes and metaphors to my 6th grade ELL students. The unit was a success and the books help greatly. The pictures are very vivid and the examples are easy to understand. Before I taught similes and metaphors, I tried to find as many useful pictures books as possible. Funny enough, this and the metaphor book were the ONLY appropriate pictures books I could find that taught about similes and metaphors. I looked online, the local library, and the school's library. I could only find these books. BUT, thankfully I at least found these books because I realized that I didn't need any other books to teach the unit because these books were great. While reading, you'll notice that there is commentary at the bottom of some pages. There are also some examples of metaphors in this book to help counter similes. Although some people may not like this, I believe it really helped my students understand the difference between similes and metaphors.Bottom line: The books in this collection are wonderful! They are great for teaching.
I bought this book for my granddaughter and she loves it. Not only does the book teach about similes (and metaphors) but it also has a nice story line that my granddaughter enjoyed!!
I have used it with my students to introduce similes. It teaches them about figurative language in an enjoyable way. They liked the book a lot. I will be using it in the classroom for years to come.
The illustrations really help capture the imagery of similes. A great way to help students visualize and use descriptive language to capture the attention of their readers in a fun way.
This is an excellent resource for teaching students figurative language. Students will find it amusingly funny and the illustrations are vivid.
Entertaining and instructive book for grade school children. A fantastic approach to learning about similes. I highly recommend this title.
