This is storytelling at its profoundest. The stories, all of them, are true. The stories, all of them, feature heroes I recognized immediately and heroes who required an introduction because they have done nothing to attract my attention. Our wounded warriors are honored and celebrated wherever heroism and love of country are honored and celebrated. I myself saw many of these young men and women when I consulted at Walter Reed. Their youth, their wounds, and their struggle affected me as few sights ever have. I felt anger at what they had obviously lost, sorrow at the difficult path to recovery, and pride that they were fellow citizens willing to give so much for my freedom. What I failed to take note of during my time at Walter Reed were the women I often saw sitting beside the soldiers. Authors Kevin Ferris and Dava Guerin noticed, thank the Lord, and dubbed these courageous women The Mighty Moms of Walter Reed. Each story recounts the treacherous journeys these women have taken and often are still taking to return health, strength, and purpose to their sons' bodies and spirits. As the narrative unfolds in tale after tale, the first shock to hit the reader is the enormity of the sacrifice made by the Moms who literally leave their lives behind, travel to Walter Reed, and do whatever is necessary to care for their recently wounded children. Their commitment is not only vital, it is fierce, uncompromising, and extraordinarily effective. Here are women of various backgrounds and situations flying into an utterly foreign environment to accompany their own son or daughter from a life-altering explosion on the battlefield to a reconstituted life back home.
