I teach fourth grade and have used many writing books to assemble writing lessons. This book along with Lori Rog's Marvellous Minilessons for Teaching Intermediate Writing have served me well. What I love about this book are the lessons that I have not found elsewhere and ideas that once considered seem very practical. For example, I had not thought about having my fourth graders write personal resumes or select random themes, settings, and character names out of a hat to form the bare bones essentials of a story. There are simply lots of wonderful ideas that can be used immediately or expanded for classroom use. Some of the writing prompts are fabulous (e.g write a legend about the day the sun did not set). The pages devoted to expanding sentences and the templates for teaching students to write persuasive essays are both kid and teacher friendly. The one pitfall of the book is the organization. There are three types of information - the student pages, teacher guide pages, and writer's notebook pages. Often within one section of a book, a page from another section will be referenced. This wouldn't be such a terrible thing if the page numbers were more intuitive. Many pages have two numbers; when the author refers to another page, it can often be difficult to know what specific page is being designated. For example, on page 37 of the Student Pages, the reader will see the number for page 37 and a page number for 61. Page 37 tells the reader to reference page 21 of the Writer's Notebook. The Writer's Notebook is in the back of the book, so you do a lot of flipping. When you turn to the Writer's Notebook, there are no longer two numbers on a page but only one. It is a bizarre setup that is hard to explain.
