The short version of how one can tell this was written by someone with minimal special skills in teaching left-handers: the author suggests writing on a white board for additional practice, which is a good tip for right-handers ONLY as left handed writing on a white board erases the text as you go.The only real concession for left-handers is that the book is spiral bound at the top. The practice tips in the book are just generic writing skill tips mostly suitable for either handiness. The alphabet font for the students to practice is an odd one, that is more difficult and less practical -- no idea what the author was thinking there (they thought it looked good?). Also limited in the amount of content for each letter. The content is not really grouped appropriately for progression of letter forming skills. Not completely useless in general, but has very little added practicality for the left handed student.
We found this book for my 3.5 yr old lefty who is really interested in practicing her letters. She likes to do the exercises though sometimes we only do 5 of 10 reps of a letter while she's learning. It's got basic pencil control exercises and letter writing. Each page has a tip for parents to help the child learn the letters (some seem general for all new writers, some specific to lefty writers). It also points out some letters that are written differently with the left hand. It emphasizes pencil hold and paper positioning so the child writes under the line instead of crooking over it. We photocopy the pages so she can do them again and again.
I'm a big fan of this series of 3 handwriting practice books for left handed writers. The content is clever and entertaining. Best I've used. We used these books in a home education setting with a 1st-3rd grader who writes left handed and a Kinder-1st grader who writes right handed. Books 1-3 have practice with tracing patterns ( or what I call " form drawing"), print letters, numbers, sentence writing, copying, and then by book 3, plenty of cursive. Both students enjoy it and happily complete the pages. I would buy another series by authors Mark and Heather Stewart in a heart beat. A pervious reviewer wrote that there was nothing special about the book for left handers which is incorrect. There is specific instruction on how left handed writers could hold their pencil, the angle to turn the paper, and pages on suppliers and informational sources for left handed writing. Each page has fun reminders for the left handed writer and really encourages excellent writing habits from the very start. I personally would not use these book with any child under age 5. The fun art, captions, and witty humor of each page will be lost to anyone under that age. If I did it all over I would start book 1 at age 7 with both of my students. I like that book 3 is being completed by my 3rd grade student now. The student can read all the fun material on each page and is understanding the humor and the history tidbits on each page. Handwriting of older student is looking sharp!
I was very impressed with this book. It gives a page full of directions that allows us right handers help our children who turn out to be left handers.
love the work book and you could probably teach these things if you thought of them. i was impressed on the simple ways to get them to practice. great book for us right handed grandparents to work with our left handed grandchildren
Very helpful in getting my left handed grandson motivated to write again. Good tips for me to help him with practicing control, his pencil grip and posture.
This was very helpful for a right handed mom who has a left handed child. Life saver...I feel like I can actually help him now correctly!
Thank you. It is good book for left handed children. Good quality, nice coloring pictures, good price for this book
