My six year old daughter was starting 2nd grade and was struggling with reading. I felt like she missed something in phonics in 1st grade. I bought this book and had her do 1 or 2 pages each day. They were fairly easy for her but it really helped build her confidence and she was able to pick up what she missed. It covers only SHORT vowel sounds. It also covers clusters at the beginning and end, for example clam, block, windSome of the words covered are:glassflagskunkcrackspellsniffswimtwindripdesklampgiftsinkcrustplantThere are many more words but just to give you an idea of what types of words are on the worksheets.

Explode The Code series are soo wonderful. My 6 year old had ended kindergarten and still couldn't read or write. I was at a loss and the teacher would just tell me that she didn't have time to give extra help to children that needed it. My daughter even told me that her teacher told her just to, "sit there and look cute." I thought that maybe something was wrong with my child or that maybe she had a learning disability that I needed to explore in order for her to reach her potential. My cousin that is also a kindergarten teacher recommended this series in order to ease my worries and my mind.I LOVE THESE BOOKS! They are soo wonderful. My daughter just finished the Explode The Code 3 1/2 now and can't wait to start more. She is now in 1st grade and does her regular homework and then the books on weekdays and weekends.BOTTOM LINE: Do not worry if your child is beating to his or her own drum, it just takes time for their own learning light to shine! Do NOT rely only on the schools in order for your children to learn, you will be greatly disappointed. You need to be extremely involved in your children's learning. Be very patient, because it will be a slow process when you start. When the light bulbs in their heads finally shine...They will SOAR!!

I have taught with the Explode the Code series for years in private schools, especially in first and second grade. The lessons are very easy to follow - each 8 page sequence introduces a new phonics pattern; the exercises get more challenging as the child moves through the lesson. The directions are very simple and the format is consistent throughout the series. The "1/2" books provide more practice with the previous book's lessons before your child moves on to the concepts in the next book.

My son is an early reader at 4.5 but was at times guessing what certain words were because he was too excited about reading the story. This book teaches not to cheat because they have similar spelled words and you have to read and understand the whole sentence and match it with the picture. It's very good for teaching comprehension. It also teaches spelling in a few different ways while learning phonics. There is lots of review for words learned. I really enjoy this book. It is black and white with minimal graphics. This helps my son because he gets distracted by neat pictures and begins to guess the story line instead of reading. It's a very crisp clean teaching book.If you child is not yet feeling comfortable with writing this is also a good book because there is some writing but not a ton. We do writing areas orally as suggested by other experienced teachers until he feels more adept at writing.

My six year old is almost finished with Explode the Code 2; her decoding skills have increased 100% since starting this program. She loves the simple illustrations and the easy to follow instructions, and I love the pace she is learning at-not too fast, not too slow. She actually loves doing her lesson each day, since the worksheets have a predictable format but aren't boring. The lessons are also short, which helps to keep her attention. Overall this is a wonderful foundation phonics program for beginning readers as well as for those readers learning the more complicated rules of grammar.

I have been using these books for 15ish years? Love them. Always do my due diligence on curriculum and cannot find anything better for decoding skills. Have had one child that needed some of the half books, and, others skip them. Had early and later readers, but, so far, all go to college early and do well. Good, solid program. Do not be discouraged if your child is struggling with reading, if your doctor has ruled out every issue. I have found that reading acquisition is like potty training or tooth eruption. There is an acceptable age range and it doesn't matter when you're grown when it happened. These books cover all the decoding skills very well, so you can be sure it isn't because there is an educational failure, if your child still isn't reading. I have also looked at the guidelines and skipped books for my developmentally ready readers when I knew they had the skills covered in that book. You know your child. Mine did worse when they had too much busy (easy) work. Maybe you do the half books, then, reading takes off, and you don't need them. Don't be afraid to use your judgment. Maybe you feel your child needs to do every book, just to be sure. I cannot say enough how easy it is to adjust the work to where the student is now, then adjust again for where they are later. Did I say I love this program? Check out the Get Ready for the Code, Get Set for the Code, and Go for the Code books, too, and, don't forget the teachers' guide. You'll need that to complete the all-important "following instructions" pages, which I can't recommend you skip, even though there are only a few. To me, it was worth the expense.
