This (relatively) slim volume is a superb introduction to the life and career of Joseph Stalin. The author makes use of very recent scholarship to provide the reader with a solid, balanced narrative. There are no new revelations here, per se, but the book would serve as a very nice text in an upper-division Russian history course. For advanced scholars, the Conclusion is particularly good, being the insights and reflections of a long-time scholar of Stalin....
Stalin can be a difficult topic, however I feel that this book did an ok job of discussing is position in the Soviet Union. I did not think it was easy to read and was written on an academic level not for the casual reader.
Its dated. There are newer books about Stalin and his life. This particular book, if you can buy it is worth about 700.00 US dollars.Looking for first prints!seconds are 200-300

This book is a continuation of biased writing on Stalin, making assumptions and repeating from the same fountain of rumors and innuendo. Stalin has been created into the devil personified by anti-communism. Any other way to look at the man would be considered blasphemy. Anti-communists writers and enemies of Stalin are prominent in the discourse. This author and others can not stop talking about Stalin because he never seems to go away. He is still the third most popular historical figure in Russia today. The elephant in the room - there is not such thing as non-class based historical analysis - is not mentioned. How you see the man depends on your economic class and level of political consciousness. Hiroaki Kuromiya is not the worst of the bunch, but he is still one of them nonetheless.
