This is the best book I have read on American politics. Here Schlafly adds to her original book which covered 1932 to 1964.Her main theme is that the main objective of the Republican establishment is to stop any real conservative from getting the nomination. This is because it wants to get more corporate benefits from increased federal spending and government sanctioned global trade. She calls the establishment the kingmakers but it is better known as the Eastern Establishment or more recently the Donor Class. Nelson and David Rockefeller were the heads of this group in 1964. It lost the nomination to Goldwater but managed to defeat him in the general election, when Goldwater/Miller lost to Johnson/Humphrey.1968 saw the war between conservatives and the establishment renewed with Nelson Rockefeller pitted against the moderate conservative Nixon. The national swing to the right gave Nixon/Agnew a victory over Humphrey/Muskie but the establishment got its people into the White House. This was especially true of Kissinger who controlled foreign policy and continued Johnson's no win policy in Vietnam. The same thing happened in domestic policy with Nixon supporting price controls and a tax increase. He ended up admitting "I am now a Keynesian." But his moderately conservative stance got him re-elected in 1972 with a landslide over McGovern/Shriver. Then the Watergate incident found him with no support from the establishment which controlled the major newspapers and media.The main reason Nixon got no support from the establishment during Watergate is that it was plotting to give Nelson Rockefeller the presidency by appointment.
