The first book written just for Stepdads with great tools and sound advice. Ron speaks truth into the role of stepfatherhood. This book provides wise insights, tangible tips and advice to help stepdads thrive in their role in the stepfamily.Throughout the book, Ron has information just for us moms. These are insightful tips and information to help us understand our husband better and also to help us walk alongside our man and help him navigate his role as stepdad. This information is vital in helping you both work as a team.I know I am a better stepmom and wife because of reading The Smart Stepdad.Ron deals with many issues that stepdads struggle with but may not talk about... disciplining their stepkids, different parenting styles, feeling respected in their home, dealing with their wife's ex. I love the chapter where Ron discusses "Sex stuff: Did You Marry a Wife (Sex Partner) or a Mother (Business Partner)? This is a great resource for both a stepdad and the woman he married.Ron also provides information for those men who are still dating a woman with kids. This information will help you prepare for the role that may lie ahead. The Smart Stepdad should be read by every stepcouple....those married and those preparing for marriage. A MUST read.
The author has a lot of great advice, regardless of whether you're approaching the situation of becoming a step-dad (ie dating, new marriage), or already engrained in the situation (already married, living w/ the kids). In addition, the author addresses common but specific challenges, such as adult stepchildren, co-mingling two sets of step-children, not having kids of your own and having an instant family. However, I have to downgrade the book because it has distracting religious references. If you're not a Christian, the Biblical references are so frequent that they are distracting from the main thrust of the advice/discussion. In addition, there are a number of times that the solution to a challenge was to have faith in God, to abstain from sex before marriage, and other preaching that just wasn't necessary in my opinion. In short, the book is worth it, but would have been much better if religion was kept out of the book.
Lot's of great information for "blended families". He hits all the right issues to deal with. Other books were very superficial but this one dives in to all the different problems faced by step dads. Not all will apply to your particular situation of course but there will be plenty that will. I highly recommend it..
I can't begin to explain how helpful this book has been with our family. I have a 14 yr. old step son and have only been married 6-months. This is by far the most challenging role I have ever taken on as a 41 year old man. I'm still in the first half of the book but have learned volumes of valuable practical info I'm putting into practice daily.
Ron L. Deal has made a specialty of counseling stepparents. His expertise in the subject shows on every page of The Smart Stepdad, one of the few books written to offer practical advice to men who find themselves cast in the role of being stepfathers. This book covers all the bases ... the various relationships that now interconnect: the stepdad and his wife who is also the mother of his stepchildren, the stepdad and his new stepchildren, the stepdad and his own biological children who are now affected by having to share their dad with new step-siblings, and even the "ex-husband-in-law," the biological father of the stepdad's new stepchildren. All of these have the potential to be "it's complicated" relationships, but Deal ably untangles the confusion and offers simple and sensible advice. He does not hold back from dealing with delicate situations (for example, how a stepdad should deal with feelings of attraction for teenage stepdaughters or dealing with romantic feelings between stepbrothers and stepsisters). The counsel in this book is solid, practical, and easy-to-understand. That makes the book highly recommended to anyone who wants to be a smart stepdad, or who might be in the position of offering advice to a stepfather who needs help filling his new responsibilities.A free advance reading copy of this book was made available to the reviewer as part of the Library Thing Early Reviewers Program. I did not know it was a Christian book. This did not take away from the good incite and helpful tips this book had to offer. I am very glad I read the book, it gave me an understanding of what to expect. When my step child's behavior mirrored the book. I was prepared and felt confident that I could deal with the issue. The book gave me a since of this behavior is expected and normal and I looked at my step child's behavior as non-personal. I understood the behavior had nothing to do with me. I recommend this book if your not Christian and I am not don't let it cloud the fact that this book has something to offer.
Step-Dads get all kinds of bad press. Reading this book reminded me of what I went through from ago 8 to 14 when my parents got divorced and mom got remarried. 30 years later I read this book and it has helped me to understand my 'now' stepson.I would recommend this book, as it is filled with great advice regardless of your religious upbringing or current beliefs.
