This book is stunning. I could not put it down. Its beautifully written, gripping, and just when you think it cannot get more interesting, Jared Leto enters the scene to help solve the mystery. True tales are sometimes stranger than fiction. I look forward to reading more of Ms. Schaefer's work. Kudos to her for this brave and important book.
I can't recommend reading this enough--it's beautifully written and a lovely rumination on family, relationships and recalibrating expectations after what we think we know crumbles.
I stayed up one night reading this book from beginning to end. It isn't a very long book to read, but it's so intriguing. This is a true story about a brother and sister that I couldn't put down, and I didn't until I read the entire thing in one sitting. I don't think other people gave this good reviews, but that didn't stop me from trying a sample for myself, glad I did! It's a drama-mystery-heart tugging book that leaves you satisfied in the end.
Captivating story, worth the time and money. I recommend it to anyone looking for a loved one or trying to find yourself.
"Fade Out" is a heartfelt description of a sister's attempts to locate her brother and to reconcile the loss of a once close relationship. There are brief glimpses into the lives of the "rich and famous." I most appreciated the author's self-revelation and self-examination. For example, toward the end of the memoir, she observes, "This whole journey, it turns out, was less about finding him and more about letting go." I agree with readers who said one started, it was hard to put down.My only disappointment was that it ended so suddenly. I would like to have seen a few final paragraphs summing up the author's thoughts and feelings on how this experience might impact her future decisions and relationships.
Jarrett Schaefer, film director, has vanished. His sister, writer Kayleen Schaefer, having observed the hilarity and the angst as Jarrett and others created 'Chapter 27', the film about the killing of John Lennon by Mark David Chapman, has had no contact with her brother for years. The loss is especially acute because of the unique bond shared by Kayleen and Jarrett. Always close from childhood and into their early adult years, both inherently creative, somehow, after the tepid reception of Chapter 27 by film critics, Kayleen and Jarrett's sibling connection ended.Aware of the vacuum Jarret's absence instilled in her, Kayleen went in search of her brother. Fade Out is beautifully written and allows the reader insight while Kayleen fully embraces her need to find her brother and ultimately, understand why he chose isolation. Is there resolution as brother and sister come face to face? This is a sensitive portrayal of loss and a courageous effort to recapture the essence of shared emotion, love, between a brother and sister. A great read!
Anyone with a sibling, anyone whose been lost, anyone who has dreamt of running away, or has had the fear of losing it all, been afraid to live solely for the approval of and conversely, the disapproval of others, will feel this story. Schaefer's writing is just as effortless and real as it gets.
An engaging exploration of family and how we see one another, what we hide and what we reveal about ourselves. Ms. Schaefer tells the honest truth in her quest to find her brother. Fade Out is thoughtfully crafted to draw you into the author's story while also making you contemplate the relationships in your own life and family.
