I received this book free from the publisher, Atheist Republic. Reviews were said to be appreciated and rewarded with another free book, but not required. This book was a straightforward description of the problems with Christianity – the numerous beliefs which go against logic or the way the world works – and require us to suspend disbelief into magical thinking. Numerous teachings that strike anyone with empathy or ethics as evil our outright insane. Claims which contradict one another logically, and contradict rationality. Claims which are historically provable as untrue. However, most people do not recognize this, as it is so culturally ingrained to accept most of the premises of Christianity that we do not think twice about it. We have been taught as children that these are good, moral, and correct beliefs, and disbelieving them is wrong. Maintaining this illusion is a major reason that churches must maintain youth outreach. At the same time, when presented with equally fanciful ideas or magical explanations from other sources, we immediately dismiss them as bizarre hallucinations, untruths, or outright fiction.Although I found very little new information in terms of rebuttals to Christian apologetics and Christian claims, it was very nice to have them all in one place. Indeed, no one should be arguing online with Christian fundamentalists without a copy of this book at hand! The most important ideas from the book though are that progressive Christians, who take most of the Bible as allegory, poetry, or other literary devices must accept at least a little of the magical thinking and ludicrous claims as fact. Othewise, they lose the whole concept of Original Sin, thus any need for a redeemer, thus any purpose for Jesus, or the forgiveness of sins.
