I purchased this mainly because we are "getting up there" and wanted to make it easier on our eyes. There are more comprehensive dictionaries (which I also purchased), but this one is more than adequate and includes most of what we ever need to look up. This is really easy on the eyes and I would recommend it for any age, including school children - those just learning how to spell. Really a beautiful volume.
This review is for Webster's New Explorer Large Print Dictionary. We had picked this book out elsewhere for a higher price. I decided to check on first. Glad I did. The print is large enough to see when you are at an older age & need this sort of thing. So far it has had all the words we needed to look up. It was delivered earlier then expected and packaged well.
My daughter has been advanced to 5th grade reading and they have to do definitions. She was having a hard time finding words before on my husband's small print dictionary. When i gave her this,i didn't have to help her find words now,she can find it herself. Saves her time and makes her more independent in doing her homework.
the first thing I noticed the minute I opened the box from Amazom and looked at the book was that the binding was super loose! Did not seem like it would last long at all. And the definitions are extremely short (I assume because the font is big). I did not feel this was a quality dictionary and would be a bit embarrassed to give this to the person who asked for a dictionary for Christmas. I do not recommend this book.I will say that I returned this dictionary to and they refunded my money very quickly. Sometimes people confuse rating the item with rating the shipper. So I want to be clear, the one star rating is for the dictionary. If I was rating the shipper (), they would get five stars from me for this transaction!
I'm only giving this 4 stars because it is so very easy to read "without" my glasses. Large print inside and out. However, it is NOT anywhere near as inclusive as the MW collegiate dictionary. Dangit. I have issues with my eyesight...not my intellect. Words like rake, snob, maintain, girdle, dairy, daisy, etc. No pictures whatsoever...since it is so elementary. I'm 50 stuck with a 10 year old's dictionary. Oh well.
The 2013 move to his high rise apartment in the dead of a Montana winter left M.E.S. with no dictionary. I spent several weeks going through the large print dictionary's .com had offered for sale to send him as a gift. When I chose and sent M.E.S. the Webster's New Explorer Large Print Dictionary his response was, 'The new dictionary has new words listed according to their area of use and meaning in a separate section in the front of the book. It is a very handy feature."
I ordered this dictionary for my mom who has poor vision. She loves it. This is a great value for a hardcover book. The binding is great and should last a long time.
My only disappointment on this dictionary is that it lacks certain words? I suppose it's because the large print means less words on each page but wish they would state that on description part. I still use but find myself going to regular dictionary & using a magnify glass.
