First, to correct this record, the Hawaiian Dictionary was written by Mary Kawena Pukui and Samuel H. Elbert. I have no idea who Mary Ann Spenser Pukui or Mara Kawena Pukui are supposed to be. These are typos that should immediately be corrected.As for the validity of this dictionary, it has been the standard for more than 40 years. Anyone wishing to learn more about the Hawaiian language and culture should own this reference book. It is absolutely essential to own this book if you are considering naming anything or anyone (from dogs to boats to children) with a Hawaiian name. Hawaiian words have multiple meanings. A word that sounds lovely may have perjorative meanings that aren't readily apparent from other smaller dictionaries. Mary Kawena Pukui was the foremost expert on the Hawaiian language and culture, and this book is her legacy to those of us who love all things Hawaiian. Mahalo Kawena.
This is the only acceptable dictionary for students of Hawaiian language. The author is not Mary Ann Spenser Pukui, however. The author is the well-known and most respected Hawaiian scholar, Mary Kawena Pukui.
This is the standard for Hawaiian language studies. No other Hawaiian dictionary even approaches its depth and scope. However, users should note that this revised edition contains a few significant changes from the previous edition in the meanings given to some words.
This is a comprehensive, easy to use dictionary that not only gives direct and indirect translations, but background and contexts for use.
This is an excellent book to use as a tool for any level, from a beginner who is just started to learn to a native speaker as a quick reference guide. Since both languages are used to find words and definitions it is a very user friendly book and easily navigated. It is a must have!
I am a new Hawaiian language student, and this wonderful book allows me to look up words and definitions either from Hawaiian to English, or English to Hawaiian. I especially like this book because the font size makes it easy to read. I have visited Hawaii over 40 times in the last 32 years, and just wanted to be able to read and write the language. Now that I am retired, I have time to devote to perfecting my own use of the language and culture of my happy place. If you have simililar inclinations this book is a must.
This is much more than a dictionary. It includes the history of the Hawaiian words, their changing meanings through time, or from island to island or when combined with other words.Almost all books by Mary Pukui are excellent combinations of anthropological science and historical heretage and stories.
The best content but typefont is so small that many will need a magnifying glass to enjoy it.
