This symptom management handbook is a very valuable resource for the health professional working in areas that require a higher understanding of pain control outside of the regualted medical-surgical and emergency hospital environment. Pain in oncology, burn, chronic disease, wound and hospice patients is a complex issue for both the patient and the healthcare provider. The algorithms help professionals look scientifically at "if" "then" issues. "If" this happens "then" this is what can be done for the situation. The table of contents tells the reader immediately that every known topic that causes pain is discussed. Then each algorithm presents the user with the drugs used, the assessment needed for the situation, and the non-pharmacologic interventions. There is even a section on the rapid use of spiritual care. If you are a lay person dealing with chronic pain or you are caring for a loved one in pain this handbook will give you understanding why the professionals involved make the decisions they make. Finally the Appendix is full of useful tools to further expertise in the area of chronic pain control. (The size of the handbook slips easily in a uniform pocket.)From the Librarian - Manager of Knowledgebase Information Services at Portsmouth Regional Hospital, Portsmouth, New Hampshire.
This has been invaluable to me as a new hospice nurse. I have been a nurse for over 30 years, but hospice work is new to me. Being on the road, having this petite but powerful reference work at my side has helped enormously with all kind of questions. When I am on call, it is so reassuring to have this book by my side as I work. I especially recommend this for all new hospice nurses. I will be using this book for many years to come.
This book is probably the very best and most concise book available for symptom management in palliative care. Keep in mind that this is palliative care, which is not always end-of-life.
I was very disappointed in this purchase. It is a flimsy spiral notebook and I did not find any of the symptom management algorithms useful. I have only been a hospice nurse for 2 years but I already knew everything this book had to offer. I was hoping to gather more useful tips; no such luck.
I have been a home visit Hospice RN Case Manager for almost 15 years. I'm taking a mental health day to catch up on documentation and other overdue 'tasks', one of which is to transcribe my written notations into my 4th copy of this little gem. 'nuff said.Patrick Monk.RN. SF. Ca.
This book is a useful tool in understanding symptom management in palliative care. There are different algorithms for things like anxiety, anorexia, etc. - that are all framed within a palliative setting. Very helpful for anyone new to hospice/palliative care.
This is a must for hospice nurses. There is a ton of information in this handbook. The amazing thing is that all the information is actually useful. I keep this in my bag and take it into every home I travel to, just in case I need some quick sage advice. Well worth the money and could also be used to help study for the CHPN test
I am not happy about my purchase of "Symptom Management Algorithms" as pgs. 66-82 are missing!!!!!! Otherwise a great resource. I can't seem to find a way to contact about this issue so am placing it in this forum. VERY unhappy!!
