Six Great Dialogues: Apology, Crito, Phaedo, Phaedrus, Symposium, The Republic (Dover Thrift Editions)
Available To Downloads

Plato's brilliant dialogues, written in the fourth century B.C., rank among Western civilization's most important philosophical works. Presented as a series of probing conversations between Socrates and his students and fellow citizens, they form a magnificent dialectical quest that examines enduring political, ethical, metaphysical, and epistemological issues. Here, in one inexpensive edition, are six of Plato's remarkable and revelatory dialogues, each translated by distinguished classical scholar Benjamin Jowett. Apology defends the integrity of Socrates' teachings. Crito discusses respect for the law. Phaedo considers death and the immortality of the soul. Phaedrus explores the psychology of love. Symposium reflects on the ultimate manifestation of the love that controls the world, and The Republic ponders society and the philosopher's role within it. Stimulating, dramatic, and always relevant, these dialogues have profoundly influenced the history of intellectual thought, and offer crucial insight into mystical, aesthetic, and other aspects of Platonic doctrine.

Very good format for philosopher lover and people interested in philosophy. Very good translation and outstanding value for money with 6 dialogues in the same book.May be expert philosophers would need more notes, but more than enough for casual readers.

What a deal! The Republic and some of my favorite dialogs in a practically free book. Font is a teeny bit small but print is clear and readable, paper so-so, pages pushed close to the margin. Jowett translation was a standard for years and is fine. This is a no-brainer. Thank you, again, Dover. Wish this were available in a deluxe edition. Be sure to check out the other Dover editions that have a couple of dialogs each. Like this: Symposium and Phaedrus (Dover Thrift Editions)

This is such a great book, and you get so much for so little. The text is perfectly clear, the contents are perfectly arranged, and you really get everything you would need to study Plato. I am just so pleased with this edition, I gladly recommend it to everyone.

very good value for a set of Plato's main dialogues - in a reliable translation - the 1950s Oxford revision of Jowett's great old translation

A great translation of Plato's best. I ordered this as a rhetoric student hoping to explore more into Plato's thinking and teaching. This is wonderful. It is small enough to carry with me in my purse or book bag. It is, sadly, paperback, which means I've already torn the cover slightly, but that is what always happens with paperbacks for me.

Tough to get through but very good. Socrates and Plato are ones that pushed into existence western philosophy. This book's translation makes easy some difficult scenes in the books. It is a very slow read, but if you are into philosophy, it is a must.

I purchased this edition and found it very nicely written. The compilation of work is organized and easy to read. I received it promptly and it was packaged very well as to prevent damage to the book. I would recommend this to anyone.

It is UNABRIDGED version. Thus, you may expect that most of the pages are attributed to The Republic. The translator, Benjamin Jowett, which is also famous, has his wiki page and you may want to take a look. The only drawback is that the paper quality is mediocre, and it seems as cheap as the "popular" books you can find in a supermarket. The advantage is that it is light and easy to carry.
