JOB AND THE EXCESS OF EVIL was written by Philippe Nemo and in 1978 and was published by Duquesne University Press in English translation in 1998. As this reviewer titled this review, this a powerful but depressing book. Nemo posed more questions than possible answers, and this well written book requires patience and careful thought.Nemo early section of this book dealt with authorship and questions why The Book of Job became part of the Jewish and Catholic Canon. Some biblical scholars argue that The Book of Job was of Persian origin. Others suggest That the Ancient Hebrews may have edited and redacted this epic poem.A brief summary of the Book of Job may help refresh readers' memories and explain Nemo's thoughtful book. Job is the subject of a "bet" between God and Satan whereby Satan told God that Job would curse God if Job lost all that he had including good health. Satan is not so much an evil doer but is God's "trouble shooter." Job loses his flocks, children, and eventually personally suffers such terrible health afflictions that his wife and "friends" are loath to even look at him. Job is physically and spiritually isolated and is confronted by three "friends"-Eliphaz, Bildad, and Zophar. Nemo basically dealt with extreme personal tragedy and not polictial purges. The latter supposedly require political solutions which are no better cure than the evil that was eliminated . Nemo dealt with personal tragedy and not political statistics. Yet, those who suffer from political purges are individuals who are more than statistics.Job answered his "friends" by reminding them that evil men prosper while good men suffer often at the expense of evil men.
