Named a 2013 Doody's Essential Purchase! This is a terrific text with good basic information and a level of detail, tools, and practicality that make it a useful resource to get older adults mobilized in any setting."--The Gerontologist [This] book provides a practical hands-on perspective for implementing function focused care in all settings...[It] is a unique resource that is relevant for all nurses and health care providers working with older adults. In addition to addressing functional decline, function-focused care provides a fresh and practical solution to many of the problems that tend to arise with older adults such as infections, falls, and pressure ulcers all known to be associated with immobility." From the Foreword by Colin Milner CEO, International Council on Active Aging This book encourages individualization, which is difficult to achieve with more prescriptive approaches. This second edition includes chapters on cognitively impaired adults, ethical issues, and patient-centered care, all of which are so important in long-term care. I found it to be very motivating in the way it helped me apply the philosophy and strategies to elders with whom I come in contact. I would highly recommend this book to anyone working with elders. Score: 95, 4 Stars--Doody's Medical Reviews The purpose of restorative care nursing (often referred to as function-focused care) is to take an active role in helping older adults maintain their highest level of function, thereby preventing excess disability. This is the only volume to educate caregivers about both the philosophy of restorative care and how to integrate it into all care settings for older adults. Now in its second edition, the text contains updated content in each chapter along with two entirely new chapters on function-focused care for cognitively impaired adults, ethical issues, and patient-centered care. The book provides a complete six-week education program in restorative care for nurses and other caregivers, numerous practical suggestions for beneficial activities that will enhance function, and strategies for motivating both older adults and caregivers to engage in restorative care. Woven throughout the text is research that documents the benefits and expected outcomes of restorative care. The book also includes the requirements for restorative care across all settings, and the necessary documentation. Restorative Care Nursing for Older Adults will help formal and informal caregivers and administrators at all levels assimilate the philosophy of restorative care and be able to develop and implement successful restorative care programs. Although this book offers wonderful information, that supports the necessity and benefits, that restorative care has for older adults in all care settings. The examples provided are very limited in each area of restorative care. This book would not increase the nursing assistants' knowledge base in the specific area of restorative nursing care. The book repeats the same basic information contained in every state mandated nursing assistant course curriculum in the nation. I was disappointed, I was expecting a useful tool to assist nursing assistants with additional information/training and skills to advance their practice in restorative care. I want to add, that I respect the collaboration of these four authors/educators for their research, published works, expertise and commitment to improving the quality of life of older adults residing in all care settings. This book is good for nurses that have no experience in restorative care and are not aware of the curriculum/course taught to nursing assistants students.

This is a great book on restorative nursing. The chapters include overview of restorative care, staff education, evaluating older adults for restorative care, restorative care activities, motivating the older adult to engage in restorative care, and documentation and reimbursement. The chapter on staff education includes copies of powerpoint slides that work very well for initial training of restorative aides. There are various forms scattered throughout the book and everything seems to be integrated with the quality assurance process. I was also happy to find a chapter on how to motivate residents. Overall, it is a most excellent book and far less expensive than BJ Collard's book. I highly recommend it.

This will be a very helpful reference as I venture into a new direction in my nursing career. I will need this when I start working as a restorative nurse.

This is a reference that is written in clear understandable language. It contains excellent examples.

the book had a lot of good information that I applied to my work.
