I ♥ this book! Honestly, it's so much more than I expected. Besides the amazing content, it's big enough and nice enough to be a coffee table book!I bought DK's Smithsonian Children's Encyclopedia of American History for our homeschool. I'm always looking for chronological, visually appealing history books with deep content to enhance our curriculum. And, enhance our curriculum it has. There are 320 full-color, jam-packed pages of everything American history in this book!Eighteen chapters cover various eras and give a surprisingly thorough depiction of each era - it's events, people, culture and more. Beginning with early exploration and Native Americans, the book touches on everything notable through 2014. I appreciate that most of the writing is very factual rather than opinionated towards any particular liberal or conservative slant.Every 2-page spread is different, but we find timelines, maps, illustrations and/or photographs all over the place. While there is plenty of informational text, the visual elements draw the attention of my children and help them not to be overwhelmed with pages and pages of text.Full copies of the Declaration of Independence, The Constitution of the United States of America and the Amendments to the Constitution, and the Gettysburg Address are included, too.I purchased this book to supplement my 9th grader's American history studies, but my 2nd grader loves to look through it as well! We are having so much fun discovering new things and I'm finding many, many ways to use it in our homeschool.
I recently bought this book to donate to our local public library, as they were short on good history books for kids. I found this book to be filled with lots of interesting facts about American history, done in an interesting way. The librarians tell me that it's one of their most checked-out history books for kids.
This was grandsons favorite book rented for home schooling. So we of course added to his Christmas gifts, so he can continue to enjoy and use its' information. 10 year old eyes lit up when he opened this gift! Win for grandparents!Arrived intact and on time. Would recommend.
Fantastic book on American History! This is an interesting and visually pleasing book that held the interest of not only my 9 year old and myself, but also my teenagers. Not an easy task for any book. This is a thorough and enjoyable history of the United States that will be useful to people of all ages who want to know more about that history.
I have always loved DK books. They are the most expressive and colorful learning book around. Most of them are written for children but as an adult, I totally love them. They present facts simply and to the point. I recommend all of their books but especially their history books.
This book makes a great companion tool for beginning teaching of American History. It is a large, thick, VERY colorful book and filled with facts and pictures. It does not have "lengthy" text in it so while kids won't get bored it also means if you want to go into more depth of various lessons you will need to have an alternate history book or a companion teaching tool. Great for beginners to read though or to throw into the kids Book Basket or just sitting on the coffee table for people of all ages to browse and reflect. But you will need other tools (internet, library, companion books) to teach a more in depth study of American History.
Good book with colors and detailed events of American history. I bought this book for my 8 year old but it's way over his head. This type of reading is better suited for children over 10 years of age. On a positive note, it's a great way to put my kid to sleep.
Oops! Double check their facts. Was browsing the pages to possibly purchase for my daughter for a timeline project and they got a year wrong. Katrina happened in 2005, not 2004 (see New Millenium pgs 262-263)
