Was looking forward to receiving the book, based on the description given. Given the pricing of the book, I expected much, much, more. No doubt that Ms. Ward has vast expertise, experience, and insight that would benefit readers, but it won't be found in this book.The vast majority of this book are examples & reproductions of forms and policies from various agencies. For example, of the 25 pages in Chapter 7, over 20 are reproductions of agency forms. The text that is authored in the chapter is pretty generic.Best advice for Effective Grants Management? Follow the guidelines and laws.Overall, disappointing. Probably not a good reflection of the author's true expertise and experience.
I agree completely with the previous reviewer--the author of the book could have written her text in a weekend and then popped in the bulk of the book by visiting websites. A complete waste of my $50. Her advice includes such vague, unhelpful nuggets as "Grantees...must have a calendar." Ninety percent of the examples offered don't really help because they won't answer the reader's specific questions. Advice like, "Usually, equipment is not returned after a project is completed," does not tell the reader what they want to know--how does that equipment become transfered to their institution? What about maintenance costs? What paperwork is required to decommission equipment and what are the legalities involved?Save your money, Google "effective grants management," and, yes, follow the laws.
This book was actually required for a class I took on grant management. It is different from other books that I have read on the topic in that it has TONS of specific forms from real grantmakers to provide examples. I learn well by example so this book was good for me.
You can get more information playing on Youtube than you will get from this book. If you are a college student and it is required than follow the instructions and do what you must.
This is a great book for all grant managers. Full of useful information and easy for the beginner to read and to apply grants management strategies.
