Finally a fourth edition after one year delay. It is actually 463 pages, not the 288 as described. Third edition had 270 pages.Very comprehensive. Almost every section has been expanded.23 total sections.Very useful four pages of pediatric dosing tables of common drugs to mL per age / weight groups.I kept my dog eared 3rd edition to my side, despite having multiple PDA apps on my phone. It is so much easier to thumb through the pages and glance down for quick facts. For more detailed info, I then go to my 5mcc and UpToDate phone apps.I kept copies on desk and gave away to students who rotate through.
If you are over 40, do not buy this book, because if you forget your reading glasses, you will never see the tiny print. The info is useful, but maybe color coding sections would make it easier to locate often-referenced items.
I found that this is one of the better primary care pocketbooks. If you are debating between this one and the little binder one I would definitely get this one instead. My only complaint is that the way it is organized. For example when I am searching for something specific like Diabetes and go to the index it will lead to me to a page where Diabetes is references but not fully explained (like the diagnosis, pathophys, meds, eval, etc). So I would recommend getting familiarized with it prior because it has a lot of great things, antibiotic coverage info and other pearls. I used it also on my internal med, ED, and other rotations as well.
I really like this book and find it very handy to have while seeing pts. in my practice. It is comprehensive and has all of the information needed to make accurate diagnoses. Would definitely buy again.
PA student here, meaning my eyes are glued in books all day every day. I found this book to be helpful, not incredibly useful so far, maybe it'll be better on rotations or when I work. But I think phone apps are faster in finding what you want, and they're updated in all areas.....
Very good reference to use when providing care for patients. I am able to keep it in my pocket which is a plus!
I am a Nurse Practitioner student and I was looking for a quick reference guide for primary care that would allow me to reference current guidelines for chronic disease management. I found this book has some helpful information, but I don't find it easy to use. I tried to quickly reference information prior to presenting my case to my mentor, but found it cumbersome and difficult to use. I found myself reaching for my phone and uptodate instead. This quickly ended up buried in my work tote and hasn't surfaced in months. Index doesn't seem to correlate well with content. Text is small and information is not easy to skim or reference. There are so many online clinical tools and apps that provide quick, evidence based information that are easier to use.
Fantastic resource, very comprehensive. Strikes a good balance between being succinct but possessing sufficient detail to provide sufficient information and management while delivering care.
