I am surprised a company with the reputation that Sylvan is comprised of published a book such as this one. My problems with it? Well, first, my credentials- I am a teacher (17 years of experience) and Dyslexia certified with a Masters in Special Education. I am looking at books to "pad" my homeschool summer curriculum for our 1st grader. This is not that book.1. If you look at the beginning pages (and later pages as well), all the child is doing is sorting words that are GIVEN to them above and the same is true in later pages. A child needs no "thinking" or phonemic awareness practice as they do so- such as, a parent saying the word and the child writing the consonant blend that is heard by the child.2. We do not call letters such as: ch, th, sh, ck, ng, qu...."consonant blends" but rather: DIGRAPHS. A digraph is completely different from a blend. A blend (defined) is 2 letters that work together and make their own sound. A DIGRAPH (again, as defined) is 2 letters that sit together and MAKE ONE NEW sound. Yes, I do teach these definitions to all students in my classes as once they know the definition, the letters then make sense as does the rule. This includes those students with Dyslexia who fall back to rules for reading as they read.I do not recommend this book. This is a waste of your child's time and, it is teaching them the wrong definitions for words. The same is true for later pages such as: Bossy "R", silent letters, etc. I was really stunned and disappointed by the very thought that someone is going to purchase this book thinking, "Well, it comes from Sylvan so it MUST be good..." when in fact, it's not.
