Anton Gill has done an extraordinary job, offering portraits, drawn from conversations, of survivors in a wide swath of society. Survivors who landed in Israel, the US, the UK, even Germany, have spoken with him at length about their experiences. Although each touches on his wartime suffering, their focus is on their lives and psyches since the war. Resistance fighters in France and in Poland, artists, professors, and scholars, all have achieved some degree of worldly success, and all, all, still carry the scars of the Holocaust. These are articulate people, and Gill is the perfect author to weave their stories into a deeper understanding of the Holocaust and its effect on individual lives than I've seen before. I've been reading about the Holocaust since 1960 (my family thinks obsessively), and this is the clearest and most engaging book I've read. Not a series of horror stories, not oral history, not straight narrative, but a blend of all three, The Journey Back From Hell is a must. I've read it once, but know I'll read it at least once more.
This was one of the better books I've read about the holocaust. The book not only discusses what the victims went through in the camps, but also what they went through afterward. I never had a full grasp on exactly how brave these survivors are until I read this book. This one small issue I had was jumping back and forth between the author and the survivor. Most often it's obvious, but at times it isn't. Highly recommended!
The number of stars I have assigned is somewhat misleading in that seems, so far, to be a well-written/meticulously researched account of this horrible era in human history. However, the author spends more time than I would have liked on introductory/explanatory material prior to the 'conversations'. This material is instructive but, for me, slow reading. I confess that I am only about one third of the way through the book and I reserve the right to add to this review at a later date when I have finished reading it in its entirety.
I have read many books about the Holocaust but this is the first one I have read that deals with the emotional feelings after liberation. There was so much research done and stories from survivors telling of their struggles to live afterwards. It was a very moving and interesting book. I highly recommend it.
I wasn't looking forward to reading this book. For those of my generation, we do know about the hell of concentration camps and each reading is painful and puzzling leaving the eternal tormenting questions unanswered. But this book throws new fascinating light on this hideous subject. I do not regret forcing myself to pick it up and once I started there was no putting it down.
read this and take a broom and sweep out any self pity in your life
A real eye opener about what concentration camp survivors have to facr
