If you teach reading or spelling, professionally or to your own family, or want to improve your own spelling, this book will give you the wheres and whys in a readable and useful format. Everything has excellent examples, in the Goldielocks fashion (not too much and not too few). I'm very happy with the reasonable price, the quality of the book (strong spine, non-flimsy pages), and the whole concept.BTW, the second edition has a comparison of British, Canadian, and USian spellings, but, IMO, is not worth getting if you already have the first. Also, in case you are unaware, there is a whole teaching program called The Logic of English sold by the author. Samples are on her web page. (And no, I don't work for her -- I just appreciate her concise and clear writing.)(P.S. there are a lot more reviews on the page for the older edition.)
I bought this book for myself last Christmas. I was having problems trying to help my second grader son with his spelling words. He didn't understand why words are spelled the way they are and his teacher just kept telling us to practice more. "Because" is not a good answer to why. I remembered being taught out of an actual spelling book when I was in school. They don't do that anymore. This book has the rules and makes sense! Not only is it an engaging read; it's informative! There are so many A-ha moments. After reading this, I bought the teacher manual and student workbook. My son went up 1 and 1/2 reading grade levels in 10 weeks. He's very proud of himself. :)
98% of English words can be explained by 74 phonograms and 30 spelling rules. That means that only 2% of words are true exceptions! The English language is logical, contrary to what most people believe. Everyone who has ever puzzled over spelling words or wondered why there are so many exceptions to supposed spelling rules should read this book.
Short, sweet, and to the point. Definitely not a long, boring, drone on the English language. Easy to read and implement. Based on the Orton-Gillingham method, Denise Eide masterfully teaches how to unlock the mysteries of the English language. For example, I always wondered why words "have" and "love" had a silent e, it wasn't "jumping back to make the vowel say it's name". With this book, the mystery is solved...English words don't end in the letter "v"! This is just one of many silent e "jobs". Uncovering the Logic of English is full of gems like these that have opened my eyes to the reasonableness of English. It's made me a more effective teacher in presenting spelling and phonics to my children in a sound and sensible manner. This book has totally changed the way I think about the English language.
I bought this book to use with my son, who I homeschool. I grew up hating weekly spelling lists, and couldn't spell to save my life. I wanted to spare my child the embarrassment of not being able to spell, and heard this book would help. This book not only helped me teach my son to spell, I was able to use it to improve my spelling as well. With knowledge of the phonograms and spelling rules, I am able to decipher the reason WHY something is spelled the way it is, and am able to figure out English words- without spell check.I ended up investing in the homeschool curriculum Logic of English Essentials and am a huge fan of Denise Eide's work. Get the book, you won't be disappointed!
I'm an Oriental. My daughters learn to spell words with phonics. We find many words that we can not to spell. When they ask me why? I don't know why, too. I told them it's sight word. But, I doubt of we missed something.I find this book from [...]. There are many video on website. After I watch the video. I bought this book. This book is very wonderful. It helps me to understand why words are spelled the way. I'll use rules on the book to help my daughters learn to spell, learn to read, and read to learn.
Amazing! Americans should really learn the rules of English. I homeschool my kids. This is our first year and my daughter has horrible spelling even though she aced her weekly tests at school. This book and the curriculum teaches WHY we have these rules instead of just memorizing the exceptions. Reading should be taught phonetically!
THIS BOOK IS FOR KIDS HAVING DIFFICULTY SPELLING. Sorry I just had to put that up front to let potential parents who might be thinking if buying this will help their kids spell know that, Boy it sure does! So it's not just going to help them read.Anyway, have never written a review on before. But somehow I felt obligated to do it, just because I hope someone like myself would actually read this and make the decision I made. You see, I stumbled on the LOE system on . It was like a last ditch attempt in the quest of finding a way to teach my 7 year old to spell. Every week, teaching my daughter Spelling for school was a nightmare. It would be a vicious cycle of me being angry at her thinking she is not putting in effort, and her crying and whining saying she is, and then degenerating into a whining mess. It doesn't help that she has an older sister that could spell effortlessly. Anyway, after reading the reviews on , I told myself I need to get this book NOW. And I did on Kindle. So I started using the method on my daughter immediately before I even had time to finish the book (Weekly spelling waits for no man :) ) But that first time I taught her was just crazy. It was like a switch suddenly being turned on. I am serious. She got all the words correct after 20 mins (Trust me this is short when compared to the 3 hours we need to do it usually). And for subsequent spellings, things just became so easy, both for her and me. Now she is confident and will try to spell things on her own using the method.Again, thank you so much! It has been a life-saver literally!
