This is an okay science book for a 5th grade homeschooler, though I think it oversimplifies and would be better for a 4th grader. Because I am homeschooling a 7th grader as well as a 5th grader and they are doing Science together, we haven't used this text much because it is WAY too simplified for a 7th grader (duh), plus we've concentrated primarily on Earth Science and Chemistry this year and neither of those topics are addressed much by this book. (Though we plan to begin Life Science/Biology/Botany in a few weeks and the first half of the book is devoted to Life Science topics, so I am sure we will use it a little more in the near future.)We also purchased the workbook and I'm not sure whether to recommend it: it duplicates the text considerably and is probably not necessary, though we've used it some. I'll update later with a firmer recommendation on that.I know that many homeschooling familes dislike using textbooks, and we don't use them as much as I thought we would (we are nearing the end of our first year homeschooling and before that my children attended public school). With science we primarily do experiments and read from other sources, plus we skip around a lot in our studies, which doesn't work well if you are trying to systematically work through a textbook. But taking notes from a textbook is something all college students have to do, so I found this cool tip online about how to use textbooks in a homeschool setting as a supplemental learning technique which also helps to groom a child's college study skills: it's called Textbook Response.Each son has a Textbook Response Journal (a dedicated spiral notebook for that purpose) which has the instructions for Textbook Response written inside the front cover.
