In The Arena by Pete Hegseth is a thoughtful and reasoned breakdown of Theodore Roosevelt’s 1910 “Citizenship in a Republic” speech delivered at the Sorbonne – a speech most commonly known for the “Man in the Arena” passage within. Section by section the speech is broken down, and he illustrates America’s failings on each point, along with suggestions for a path forward. At varying points throughout the text, he illustrates his own personal development from a clueless youth to a conservative editor who spoke his mind. A journey from a Wall Street functionary to an Infantry Platoon Leader in Iraq to an Infantry Officer tasked with civil affairs duties in the heart of one of Iraq’s most ancient cities. In a few short years, Hegseth moved from a freshly returned veteran to an inexperienced grassroots lobbyist (in the best possible meaning of that term) on Capitol Hill, to an embedded reporter, ultimately ending up as a Fox News contributor. Yet this is not a memoir; rather, he uses the outline of his life to illustrate the values and convictions that he has grown to hold dear as well as why he holds them, all through the lens of Teddy Roosevelt’s famous speech.Though Hegseth writes with a conservative bias, any thoughtful American of any political orientation can take something positive away from this book. Your views may be at odds with Hegseth’s regarding bumper stickers, President Barack Obama, or bicycle helmets, but even if you disagree with the examples he uses to illustrate his points the thrust of his argument remains valid. Our citizens are disengaged, and citizenship itself has little meaning to most Americans.
