My kindergartener is a little behind on skills because I did not put him in preschool. I got this hoping it would catch him up. We sat down for 15 min and went through nearly 1/4 of the book.It does provide a fun way to practice writing letters and letter sounds, but it really is more practice for preschoolers instead of kindergarteners.
We use these to supplement our home school activities. Very clear, concise instructions, great color pages and images, answers in the back, such a wonderful resource, especially for the price. I DO wish the pages were perforated, that is about the only complaint I have. The past 2 years we have used these, I just take an evening and gather all the Sylvan books we have bought and take a couple hours tearing out the entire book being careful not to rip pages in half as it can be easily done if in a hurry, hole punching it and storing it in a 3 ring binder. That way, all year I do not have to be tearing out X amount of pages per day or week etc. and they are all handy and ready to go. I would pay extra to have them perforated! haha But despite the extra work (which technically isn't all completely necessary but we've found it impossible to use without at least tearing out the pages) I still highly recommend these lesson books.
I bought this as a supplement book because I homeschool my children. This book is amazing and everything I want in an educational tool for my loves. My daughter is four years old and already reading and this book just drives the focus points home. The colorful pictures are easy to look at and fun to learn about, highly recommended.
I highly recommend. My 5 year old grand-daughter loves this book. We keep it in the kitchen and she grabs it just about every time she comes over. It keeps her occupied while she waits for a snack or a meal. No more requests to watch t.v.! She can complete the exercises with minimal direction. And, as she completes each page, she knows to write her name at the top and wait for her "teacher" to grade it with a star. I will definitely order more Sylvan books for her.
My 4 year old loves the "challenges" of this workbook. It presents a systematic approach to learning sounds of consonants and vowels which my little one finds fun and absorbing. However, some of the pictures are not clear. For example, the mouse and the rat were very similar. A mop puzzled him: "What's this? Spaghetti at the bottom of a stick?"
Great beginner book! Colorful pictures, great activities and exercises. Wonderful book for teaching your kindergartner reading or in my case my pre-schooler. It has fun exercises in teaching letters and sounds, words, and reading comprehension. Lessons are laid out from easy to difficult. Starts with learning the individual letter and their sounds, and then filling in missing letters for some three letter words, matching words with pictures, and teaching rhymes. Once your kids learn the letters and sounds, then on to the next level, learning some sight words and basic sentences. And the last level is reading comprehension. There are some short stories and students can learn the basic elements in a story like characters, setting, story sequence, problem and solution. Great book in my opinion! Just a little complaint (though it doesn't lessen the value of the book), the pages are a little shiny, that when my kid uses crayon to color it, it doesn't come out well, it slides on the paper. Colored pens in my opinion are recommended. Overall rating though, I still give 5-stars for this book!:)
Alll the products from sylan is very creative and good practice. I gave 4 stars because they can't tearable so I tear out each pay for them to work on it some time it kind of hard to write between pages
Great tool for my 4 year old. My son knows some site words and this has been a great tool to assist him in learning to read and enunciate words! A great starting tool in teaching children the concept of reading. And I don't homeschool my son, this is what I do with him as homework.
