This is an excellent resource. It is concise and contains a wealth of information. I teach second grade and am working on a Master's degree in literacy. I am finding this book to be invaluable. Much of the information is sorted into charts for easy referencing. So many of the books I have read lately seem to ramble on and on. This book makes it's point and moves on to other salient information. I get rid of so many of the professional books I purchase after I read them. This one is a keeper. It is very pertinent to the current trend in improving the literacy of our children.

Gail Tompkins has authored a wonderful book for teachers of literacy. The book is comprehensive, covering everything from emergent reading to teaching in the content areas. Tompkins has done a thorough job of research, and she presents her material in a readable and useable format.

This is a fantastic book. It is written well and has great applications for teaching literacy in the classroom. This is a book that I will keep for a resource in the years to come because of how valuable the information is as well as all of the additional resources provided within it. However, the website is not as helpful as I hoped. When I originally purchased the book from , the internet code was not included by the publisher to access the website. When I called the publisher to ask them about it, they were not helpful at all. did help me out so now I do have access. So, the book is great, the publisher was not helpful, and the website is not one that I have been impressed with to this point.

Filled with wonderful ideas for helping children learn better literacy skills, this textbook is bright and colorful and easy to read. The chapters are a bit long and with all the information they contain you can get bogged down.

This book is a great resource. Ms. Thompson believes that it is imperative that teachers offer students a comprehensive, balanced approach. She reasons that one should mix whole language with phonics. This resource is very readable and practical, and not riddled with lofty, educational jargon.

Pros: This book is an easy read compared to other eduactional textbooks that provides well defined instructional strategies. This is a good reference book for anyone who teaches reading. The glossary and index are excellent.Cons: The book is written for teachers of grades K-8. Teachers of older students with disabilites will have to modify many of the strategies to suit older students.

This book was great for the "Teaching Reading" class for my education major requirement. It was a great companion for the classroom material and I will not be selling it back to !

I used this as a college textbook. It was in great condition , delivered. I just did not like how this book was organized. For me it just was not organized by topi and you would have to seach everye here to find what you needed.. There are great tips and assessments in the book. If your willing to search through for a while to find what you need, get the book.
