This book is okay as a supplementary book to help kids with their reading, but it falls short as a tool to teach comprehension. Many of the lessons require the student to answer questions that are not answered or referenced in the given reading or to define words that aren't presented in a context that would make the meaning clear, so it would be extremely difficult if not impossible for a child who hasn't encountered these words before to answer the question or guess at the meaning. (For instance, in a reading on whales one sentence goes: 'They can learn tricks', without elaboration. The child is then expected to answer 'What trick might a sea park whale do?' and an additional question about the training process, which they will not be able to do without guessing unless they have heard about trained whales outside of the book itself.)I'll finish the book out and my kids seem to enjoy it, but I can't honestly say they're learning much from it.
My daughter is homeschooled and would be entering 1st grade in the fall if she were in public school. I bought this book to augment our other activities and it is great! She loves the content and design. There are enough stickers to get one for each page of work, plus one for the progress map located on the front inside cover. I promised a special Mommy- Daughter day when the progress chart is complete. Somehow (I don't know why) this is more amusing to her than me giving out stickers, even with the same end reward. Go figure....but whatever works is my theory. She is an excellent reader and is reading at about the 3rd grade level but we started with the 1st grade for comprehension to ease her into the style of independent reading and question answering and to help her gain more confidence in working independently as well as with nonfiction content. She is flying through it and I am having trouble getting her to go to bed because she just wants to keep working. We've had it for less than a week and she is half way done with it. We are online today ordering the grade 2 book now.As a former teacher, I can say that the content is good and a 1st grade reading level is about the right target. I had to run out to our local teacher store today becasue my 5 year old and 2 1/2 year old were so "jealous" that they insisted on getting books from the same series for themselves. Any book that makes them want to work gets an A+ from me!
This is a good workbook for beginning readers--it starts with extremely simple stories (a couple of sentences and questions with pictures) and works up to increasingly complex material. It was great for my daughter in that she gained confidence quickly with the easy passages, and ramped up to the tougher material painlessly. The sticker system in the this book (as with the other books in the Teacher Created Resource materials) is motivating; each page gets a sticker on completion, and there's a sticker to put on a path from start to finish for each page, as well. It never ceases to amaze me that stickers work as a reward mechanism, but who am I to complain?Wait, wait--I will complain about two things: by over-simplifying the material, errors and ambiguity in the non-fiction sections can cause confusion, meaning I end up having to clarify. Also, some questions are poorly worded...which also means I end up having to clarify.
Not really first grade. Stories are more difficult than first grade level. More like second. BUT the great thing is that they are informational text which is hard to find in primary materials. Story on left side and questions on the right side which is how many high stakes tests are set up in second grade. Just put a sticker over the number 1 on the first page and you can use this book with any child who struggles with comprehension and text evidence. Small size book, so easy to story. All material is black and white. VERY REASONABLE cost too!
My first grader flew through this book. He liked doing the assignments. I usually get my kids a grade or two above where they are so as to keep them ahead of the game but I got this book just to see how he would respond to it. He didn't need any help but wasn't bored at all. I also got the 2nd grade book, which he flew through as well.
I got this book to assist my autistic son with his reading comprehension. My son is severely behind and reading comprehension has been one thing he has not mastered. This book is perfect for not only 1st graders but any parents with special needs kids or struggling reading. I highly recommend this book. It takes you thru story sequencing, answering the who, what, when, where questions. The book is really a great value as I have looked around and any thing that is geared for special needs are struggling readers tends to be pricey.
Great book to keep up skills over the summer! Comes with stickers that can be added to a little game board, so as assignments are completed it gets them that much closer to winning the game. Makes it more fun then just assignments. She also enjoys the assignments, they have pictures to go with the reading and pictures with some of the questions. They are coloring book style pictures so when the assignments done she can color in the pictures. Great buy for the price!
