This book was purchased as "New" from using Prime. This book is much thicker (1.3in) than the original 6th edition (1.0in) and the pages are not smooth and glossy like the original, they are rough dry. The book arrived late, in a damaged box but took care of that. I took away 2 stars because I wanted the original with book glossy pages, that is thinner for carrying and more lightweight. (Book weight adds up in a backpack!)
This book was published in 2015, but might as well have been written in 1950. If this is what family therapy is based on, then the author is clueless as to the multitude of family constellations that have no "theory" to work with. That is a shame, as how are therapists supposed to work with families that are not based on middle class nuclear family structures? Yes, there is mention of other structures, but the basis is still the nuclear family. Update this book please, and include feminist theory, intersectionality, queer theory...stop being so based on heteronormative, privileged perspectives on family.
Great book to being learning about the marriage and family therapist field. I am using this book in a class for my Master's program and have thus far enjoyed it. It is an easy reading book so that the information flows easily without too much dryness like other textbooks. I enjoy the poems that Mr. Gladding includes at the beginning of each chapter!
The book didn't talk as much about identifying unhealthy family dynamics. Focusing on healthy family dynamics is great but if I am seeing a family who is coming in because they don't have those healthy qualities in place, then I need to be able to better identify unhealthy dynamics.
Well-structured book and very informative, but very poorly written. This is a set text for a class I am taking in graduate school for my doctorate in clinical psychology. The author uses excessive quotations from other sources - sometimes one wonders if this author thinks critically about anything he writes. Paragraphs are often fragmented; for example the end of this paragraph on page 339 (4th ed): "The behaviours that go with substance abuse or dependence permeate and penetrate into other relationships and impact the actions of everyone who comes in contact with the person who has the disorder. 'Estimates of the economic costs of mental and substance abuse disorders in the United States are in excess of $200 billion per year' (Evans et al., 2005, p.621'" (end of paragraph). Not only does this second sentence seem inappropriate following the first, the author has already mentioned costs to the economy 3 times in the past two pages. Further, the author frequently uses rather (may I say) useless 'filler' statements. For example, the first statement in the above-mentioned paragraph is one which a graduate student would already be expected to be aware of. May I also point out that this textbook is rather America-centric and practically ignores data from international communities.Recommended for undergraduate American students, not recommended for either American or non-American graduate students.
This book was a requirement for a Marriage and Family Counseling class. It is written very well and is a very easy read compared to many text books I've had to read. Gladding is always a good choicein textbooks!
It was a text book, I wouldn't have bought it, if it wasn't for a class. I have no other Marriage and Family books to compair it to, but the cases were good.
This is a good introductory therapy book for clinical students. It includes context, history, practice materials, and ancillary materials.
