Another wonderful addition to the "Painless" series, this little handbook is a must-have for students, parents, and teachers who want to make spelling easier for themselves or others. Let's face it, spelling isn't exactly high-interest learning - but the "Painless" guide truly does make learning easy and nowhere near as boring as the typical spelling books we all endured in school. The examples are fresh and interesting, and the explanations are clear...and best of all, this guide really does make learning/teaching spelling a PAINLESS experience!
To be quite honest, I couldn't imagine spelling has a lot to do with pronunciation before. The author clearly associates each letter pattern with each vowel sound.(e.g./u; o as in woman, ou as in could, oui as in bouillon, u as in bull, oo as in wood) It sounds like a real cliche, but practice makes perfect; you'll get used to it once you get the pattern indicated in this book! The same is also true of prefixes(pre-, post-, re-, dis-, ex-, etc.) and suffixes(-ed, -tion, -er, -or, -ee, etc.). Both will help you strengthen your vocabulary-building if you know what they mean. Again, practice makes perfect!!
I purchased this book for my 11 year old daughter who is homeschooled and wanted to work on her spelling. This is a great teaching aid for the parent. She enjoyed hearing about the suggestions in the book, but didn't find it all that enjoyable on her own. If you have a reluctant speller, I recommend this book as a jumping off point from which lessons can be derived.
Excellent book for someone who struggles with spelling. It is written well and it is not over-whelming, with rules and how to's! It is done in bite sized pieces so you can get through. I bought it for my ten year old daughter and though ti would also suit someone who is older, she can cope with it well.
This book is a very good supplement to any grade school course. It is also an excellent aide for adults who have problems with their spelling.
I'm a college student going to school to be a teacher and this book is great. I use it as a resource for my lesson plans and in my school work. This book is filled with tons of great examples in lament terms so anyone can understand it. It's simple to navigate and has a user friendly layout.
I.M.H.O., this wasn't as great as the math books in the series. Basically, the benefit is derived by copying the selected words over and over. I suppose I was looking for some magical way to help my son improve his poor spelling - and there really isn't such a thing.
This a good book for entry-level students. It contains some interesting information about the history of English language and great charts with common and unusual spellings. The numerous "Brain ticklers" exercises and drawings are a little overwhelming and maybe unnecessary.
