I bought the 3rd grade one last year for more to be 3rd Grader - I was hoping this one would be a little more mature - with less kid focused items. The book approaches the children as though they are still needing to be gently guided - I wish they jsut gave the work without all the little pictures and stories fit for a 4 year old. This will be my last Sylvan book purchase. Bought the DK publishing Mth book and way more appropriate and more like what he gets at school. Disappointed in Sylvan for structure and presentation - I have to argue with my son to do the pages as he says they are babyish and too easy - a waste of his time! He likes the math book though as it is just math problems no baby things. The Sylvan book also puts the answers on the page so I have to remove them before he can work - it is just too tempting to look at the answers if you are already annoyed and just want to be done. They should put them all in the back so the parent can remove them easily.
I was not happy with this book. The selection of words seemed a bit too hard for the age group and then not only that, but not terribly applicable. There was absolutely no grammar mechanics at all and grammar is so important in learning reading! I didn't like the way the book was laid out either with all the answers on the page so you had to tear them off the page and hide them before you could even let the kid have the book. Fortunately it wasn't very expensive, but this was truly a book that will not actually help kids learn much of anything.
I thought this was going to be great, but on page 33 and 3 major mistakes later, I am done with this book.One was on page 18 where they obviously forgot to include a word in the list that was needed. My husband and I had to figure out that a word was missing and what it was.Another mistake was on page 31 where the clue for a crossword word was, "it's ____" and we knew one letter and that we were to use a prefix. Are you kidding me? There was no list of words to use. The answer was premature. Bizarre.And it was either this one or the math one that said check your answers on page 19, and there were no answers there or on page 119 and there was no 190.Throwing this away and trying Kumon.Also, I don't know what the other reviewer is talking about with regards to stories and pictures. Those aren't in the book. And I wonder if the other reviewers have even gone over this book with their children.
Has good vocabulary but can be ambiguous for children with any kind of reading disability. Word lists are not always readily available which makes answering tedious. They are also frequently words we need to memorize but you are still guessing the answer which is not always an effective memory tool for long term knowledge. Arrived on time but I do not know that I would purchase this book again. However, their math books have been great.
Bought this for my son to work on over the summer. Activities are well created, and interesting. Great for kids to practice and keep from losing ground over long breaks!
My twin daughters have used 3rd grade books, and they learned a lot from them, so I bought the 4th grade books as well. This 3 in 1 book is really economical. The questions are well designed so that kids do not get bored easily or scared away after a few pages. I recommend it to 3-4th graders.
I am homeschooling a fourth grader. This book nicely meets our spelling, vocabulary, and reading needs. My daughter is responding nicely to how she can work independently when I assign certain pages each day. I'd highly recommend this book!
Working with my daughter, she's going into 5th grade, but she needs to preview 4th grade academics. Only on the 3rd chapter, so many mistakes?? Who edited this book? The spelling words are great but the worksheets seem to have at least one mistake per chapter so far. Would love to return!!!
