First, I chose to purchase a used copy of this book. It was advertised as very good condition, but it was not good condition. I found writing on some of the worksheets (answers filled in), and several lesson pages were torn out - important pages with the actual lesson (the Introducing New Information section) on them. The book seller would probably not have been able to tell that pages were missing because it wasn't obvious.Regarding the actual book, it was not exactly what I was looking for. 1. It is huge! It would be overwhelming if I presented it to my 2nd grader and said we were going to use it as an actual text/workbook. I am an adult, and I am completely overwhelmed by the large pages and small text written in dozens of paragraphs. It takes a lot of time and effort to decipher. 2. The lesson explanations would have to be read verbatim to be able to set up the lesson appropriately, and my kid would be very bored with this. 3. The spelling rules are buried in all the text at the beginning of each lesson. It would have been helpful if the actual rule had been called out with a header or boldface or anything. As it is, I have to dig for them. After I dig and try to determine what rule the author is demonstrating, in the first 20 chapters, it ends up not being an actual rule but a common pattern or simply a group of words with the same sound. 4. There are a lot of obscure words that would be useless to a student. I have a college degree and have worked in a language arts/writing field for 25 years, and I have yet to use "edict", "bray", and "ireful". It was like the author was trying to find as many words as humanly possible to demonstrate a rule, but she should have just stuck with more common words. Sometimes less is more.
