Bridges Not Walls: A Book About Interpersonal Communication
Available To Downloads

Since the first edition in 1973, Bridges Not Walls has examined the power and promise of interpersonal communication in intimate relationships, families, communities, and cultures. The text presents a broad range of scholarly and popular articles drawn from several disciplines, including communication, psychology, and philosophy, all chosen for their understandability and practical applicability. Within these readings are thought-provoking discussions of interpersonal contact, identity-management, verbal and nonverbal cues, perception, listening, assertiveness and self-disclosure, family communication, intimacy and social support, defensiveness and hurtful communication, conflict management, culture, and dialogue. Together, the readings emphasize the social and relational elements of human communication, the overlapping influence of verbal and nonverbal cues, the prominence of culture, and the close connection between quality of communication and quality of life.

It's good to know that if I'm ever in a tragic accident that causes a horrific amount of brain damage I will still be able to become a communications professor because that is how stupid and insane this book is. The author just says common sense information and then makes up some weird name for it to sound intellectual but actually comes off as insufferably pretentious and dim. As you might imagine, my communications professor was essentially the same way so naturally we were assigned this expensive piece of garbage. I literally read maybe 3 chapters in the entire book and still passed the class, which is how depressingly simple this book is. Seriously, if you are assigned this book DO NOT WASTE YOUR MONEY. Just have an IQ over 75 and you'll do just fine without it, I believe in you.

This book with make you reevaluate how you communicate both personally and professionally. It will define and redefine communication. The benefits and the topics mastered in the book are beyond what a simple brief review can capture.

Rented for a class in a Masters program. A lot of valuable information. Was expensive earlier in the year, now that prices have gone down a little I will purchase for reference in my library:-)

I read this book for a class I just finished. It was not torture to read, it was actually very interesting and immensely helpful. I enjoyed reading it and wish they sold it in Kindle version.

The authors skim over theories or sometimes do not name them at all but it is a standard undergrad book. I'm teaching from this edition right now and am curious as to what the newer editions are like.

This is by far the most in-depth, most entertaining, most enlightening textbook I have ever read on interpersonal communication. The author uses short essays (told by other authors) to give examples, then he follows with a Main Ideas section after each essay. It's so much more applicable to real-life application than the normal textbooks full of definitions. Highly recommend!

this book gives you a deep knowledge about interpersonal communication touching several areas of the subject. the arguments are completed with different essays of other scholars according with the main idea of the author.

I am really pleased with this book. I have been reading most of it over the summer vacation in preparation for an Interpersonal Communications course I will be taking in the fall at our local community college. I like the objective nature of the presentations. The selection of writings is excellent. Highly recommended!
