Surgery; a Competency Based Companion is a valuable learning tool for all medical students. This text, unlike other surgery study guides, is organized in a chief complaint-based manner. Students are able to look up a specific chief complaint and learn different diagnoses to consider during their evaluation of a patient. Surgery; a Competency Based Companion goes a step further with a helpful color-coding system that assists students in separating the "zebras" from the "horses," and in prioritizing each differential diagnosis. For every diagnosis included, the book gives an informative synopsis that provides an excellent review of the subject at hand. Each section is succinct yet in depth enough to afford students a complete picture about a patient they might actually be seeing or admitting, and includes tips on how to speak intelligently with colleagues regarding each chief complaint. I also appreciate that the text is extremely patient centered. For example, under the section discussing bariatric surgeries, the text spells out for the student how to explain certain procedures to their patients. It goes so far as to outline figures that will not only help the patient understand their diagnosis and anticipated procedure, but also enhance the medical student's understanding. Different sections of the text have information about professionalism and interpersonal and communication skills relating to certain patient presentations. I also appreciate the last section of the book entitled "Operations." In this section, there are descriptions of different surgery procedures in a quick glance manner.
