The narrator is a square, a member of the caste of gentlemen and professionals, who guides the readers through some of the implications of life in two dimensions. The Square dreams about a visit to a one-dimensional world (Lineland) inhabited by "lustrous points", and attempts to convince the realm's monarch of a second dimension; but is unable to do so. . .

This is an interesting book. Dated 1884, woven with strange and negative perception for women but anyway definetely interesting.Every character is happy in his "limited" universe. They do not want to hear anything about other possible things. When they have been exposured such explanations they got angry!Every character lives in his universe "a dimension missing". In Lineland every character can see a point which has zero dimension in a universe of one dimension which is lenght. Every character is capable to deduct missing dimension by thinking, dreaming,... In Lineland every character is aware of the others length which they have never seen...It is similar in Flatland, there are squares, triangles, circles,... but all they can see is a flat line and they need to touch eachother to check the shape.A square tried to enlighten a line but failed. They hated each other. A sphere tried to enlighten a square, first he pissed off and then sphere pushed him to other dimension.... That is a shock. The shift has happened by force! Square enlightened more than expected hence he queried sphere about the fourth dimension. This time sphere pissed off.We belong to our universes and provided a force majeur we are capable to adopt ourselves to a new paradigm.Unfortunately this is not a voluntary process.I suggest Thomas Kuhn for those readers who interested in "paradigm shift".
For the mathematical minded hungering logic and the anatomy of dizzying argument, this is the ultimate feast. Yet Flatland is more than a story of mere shapes suffering shifting geometrical dimensions as geography, nations, politics, religion, science and medicine, education and reason interweaves relationships with Man, Woman and Child reveals the story as a sparkling allegory of the most charming variety~ 'A Straight Line to the touch is worth a Circle to the sight.'
This is not a recent book, but it becomes timeless since it masterly places our ability to perceive in 3D, by comparison with Flatland's inhabitants, and opens to the possibility of reality being beyond what we perceive.
I was introduced to this book at a teacher's conference and looked forward to reading it. However, the book, while a wonderful idea, does not come out as intended. The concepts become difficult to follow with all the education needed to understand Flatland. The actual story seems rather anti climatic. All that work on A Square's part...for what?
I dont understand how it was subtitled a A Romance as it is anything but. However, given when it was written and how so much of this thinking evolved into our current theories of the multi universe, it is worthwhile reading for those who love physics and thought experiments.
This is not a romance at all, it is just a beautiful work of art about a question we can't ask ourselves, something we can comprehend.The book was one of the first sciency books that I ever read and the one that got me hooked on that.Highly recommended for anyone, from little kids to whatever age you are!
I loved this book as a youngster and was delighted to find it half a century later. It is charming and refreshingly different. Whether you enjoy math or philosophy, or just unusual stories, this book will amuse you and challenge your view of the world.
An interesting dive into a world of varying dimensions. Inspires thought about what a fourth dimension would entail if you are able to imagine such a thing.
