The title of my review I hope demonstrates the scope of this massive chronological tome of crossoversI think that many people grow up using the crossover concept without ever thinking about the idea of it being a crossover. Usually this involves the idea of wouldn't it be neat if character x met character y or character x could beat the tar out of character y (insert your own favorite characters). Most people are of course familiar with this phenomenon either through comics or television. In comics various super heroes from different titles show up in each others books; the team up is a crossover of sorts. In television characters from different shows make an appearance on another show. The cynical adult part of me realizes that these were no doubt marketing decisions to promote one comic or show by having the appearance of a more popular one. As a kid however I was thrilled by the Green Hornet showing up on the Batman show or by every one of the yearly JLA-JSA crossovers. The history geek part of me also like the television shows You were there in which modern newsmen showed up at historical events or Steve Allen's Meeting of Minds where historical characters sat down to discuss issues.Philip Jose Farmer used the crossover concept in almost all of his major fiction. His Riverworld series takes people from all throughout earth's history and places them on a world molded into a vast rivervalley. Cultures from various times and places are often placed right against each other and of course Farmer managed to make his favorite historical characters meet one another, for good or ill. The World of Tiers series also plays with the idea of having historical epochs crossover for each level of the world of tiers represents a different historical epoch.
