Remember when Six Degrees of Kevin Bacon was a legitimate game that was at least kinda fun and really tested your movie trivia knowledge, at least until IMDB took the skill out of it? You know the game, anyone who ever appeared in a movie can be linked to Kevin Bacon by leaping from co-star to co-star, supposedly no more than six times. Johnny Depp was in EDWARD SCISSORHANDS with Wynona Ryder, who was in BEETLEJUICE with Michael Keaton, who was in BATMAN with Jack Nicholson, who was in A FEW GOOD MEN with Kevin Bacon. I always tried to play that game from the inside, the world in which the characters exist. Johnny Depp portrayed Glen Lantz in A NIGHTMARE ON ELM STREET, which also featured the character Freddy Krueger, who in FREDDY VS JASON fought Jason Vorhees, who killed Jack Burrel in the original FRIDAY THE 13TH. And Jack Burrel was played by Kevin Bacon.Taking the worlds of the great pulp heroes like Tarzan, Doc Savage, and the Shadow as the baseline, Phillip Jose Farmer built on William S. Baring-Gould's concept that Sherlock Holmes and all of his adventures were real. Farmer one-upped Baring-Gould's "Game" by showing how not only were these characters real people, but they are also related to a family genetically predisposed to create larger-than-life heroes, thanks to the radiation of a 1795 meteor that landed in Wold Newton, England. Thus he links Holmes, Savage, and Greystoke to Nemo, Bond, Wolfe, Allard, and so many more heroes and villains from literature. And once you consider all the adventures these people have had, and the characters they met along the way, you find that nearly anyone of consequence from the realm of fiction can be linked back to Kenneth Robeson's Doc Savage.
